First Graders in the Spotlight...

This week has been full of fun & learning! It was so exciting to meet our 7th grade budddies! We enjoyed doing an icebreaker and getting to know them. We loved having cookies together and showing them our classroom work. We can't wait for our buddy run/walk coming up on October 8th.

During center time this week we have been continuing our guided reading strategy. Our class has been working on making venn diagrams which helps us compare and contrast two different things. It was really cool when we learned about compound words and even made a compound word classroom book.

For Math this week we have been working on shapes, geoboards, pattern blocks, and more. We played around the world with addition flashcards up to 20 and loved it! Our class has been working on number lines in Math with Mrs. Waller. They had their own huge number line out in the commons and they walked the number problems themselves! Miss Fate brought them seashells from her trip and the children traced them, used them in addition problems and practiced writing switcheroos.

In computer this week we have been working in Kid Pix on task cards designing a picture that matches the card. We have also been working on ryhming and abc order on www.teachermousepad.com. We hope you are enjoying their hand made computers at home!

In TNT (try new things) this week, we were so fortunate to have Mrs. Waller's Dad, Dr. Cott, who is a veterinarian and who drove from the University of Missouri to see us. He showed us a slide show all about his job and the animals that he works on when they are hurt. The children came up with many wonderful questions and were fascinated by his presentation. He gave the children notepads, pencils and a coloring/activity book. We had many children say that they want to be a veterinarian just like Dr. Cott when they grow up!

For Hands on Science last week we wanted to figure out what would happen with two stalks of celery, one placed in water & and one in blue food coloring. The children did a KWL chart and discussed what that they knew about what might happen, what they wanted to know about it and what they learned after the experiment. They completed this activity by drawing a picture of the celery before and after the experiment. We loved cutting out magazine pictures and classifying them as living or nonliving. Chum-Chum, our class caterpillar, is now in the chrysalis stage and we are so excited for what's to come!!!!

In Social Studies, we have been presenting How I Got My Name to the class and we have enjoyed learning about our classmates. As their teachers, we have learned so much about thier names and who they are as individuals. Soon, they will be posted in the classroom above their cubbies.

Thank you to all of our parent volunteers that have helped us out in the classroom. We really appreciate your hard work and help!!!
