Miss Fate & Mrs. Waller's class have been busy in 1st Grade this first month. This week in language arts, otherwise known as our center time we have started using the guided reading strategy in our reading groups, we have been working on short vowels, consonants & vowels, acrostic poems with our names, rhyming, and compound words. We also did an activity called: I Went Walking where each child chose a different couplet to create an art project describing their sentence. This was after we read a big book on the story I Went Walking.
In math both of us have been working on teaching numeration, skip counting, even & odds, addition with unifex cubes, making math problems with grids using unifex cubes, ordinal numbers, switcheroos, hundreds charts with chips and doubles. The children loved using the website: abcya.com on the computers during a center to practice their skip counting using a hundreds chart online.
This week in TNT (try new things) we made our own computers. We watched a computer programing Magic School Bus video and even practiced using a listening center CD to recognize where the keys are on the keyboard.
In science, we discussed all of the living and nonliving things our friends saw in their yards at home. We cut magazine pictures out and categorized them into living and nonliving things. Our favorite thing we did was when we made Glop in hands on science. It was super messy but lots of fun!! Mrs. Waller brought in our own classroom pet caterpillar. We voted on the name...Chum-Chum! So, we are extremely excited to watch him grow and develop into a butterfly.
We love our new ceiling projector! Anything we put on the computer can be seen on it. We also watched a theme video on the projector called People. It showed the children that all people can be different. We have been talking about emotions, feelings and others to go along with our new theme. Soon, we will present our How I Got My Name for the class.
