Thursday, February 17th is our Famous American program!!

These children have learned to appreciate their forefathers, the leaders of this country who paved the way for our life today. They have discussed comparisons of their life and all these Americans and have said how much they learned from some of the books they've read. Bella brought a book on Abe Lincoln and read the whole thing to the class. Did you know that in order for Abe to remember things he tucked little pieces of paper up in his hat and used them when he needed them??

Big news!! As our week began to warm up, we were able to go outside. It was great to get outside again. The school now has a contract with Goodwin Turf to have snow removed on the playgrounds immediately following a snowfall.
Miss Taylor read Penny Pot in Math while the kids followed along with their pot of money. They did addition and subtraction of money while she read. How many ways can you make 25 cents. Try that one! We did that as a class and found ____ ways. Can you find the number we should fill in there?
It's Dental Awareness month. In Science we watched a short 4 minute video of sugar and cavitites!! Sugar and Cavities are a bad combination. We looked at various foods and drinks and how much sugar is in each. "Milk??? How can there be sugar in milk", they asked.
We talked further about the sugar and bacteria in your mouth. They cause a reaction in your mouth...an acid attack and a cavity forms. Taking it one step further, because it's hard to see plaque on your teeth and what sugar does to your teeth when you don't brush...we did the penny experiment. In a solution of vinegar and salt we dipped a penny for 15 seconds. The penny came out clean because of the acid attack on the penny. This same kind of attack happens to the tooth causing the hole or cavity.

Hooray for the Parents! Thank you for helping your child remember everything this unit.
Please send your child to school in the Famous American costume on Thursday morning. They need a change of clothes an shoes for the rest of the day. We will see you in the MPR at 9:15. Please come back to the room and say hello to your child afterwards.
Have a wonderful week.
