April 4-8th

We began this week asking what the students already knew about Fairy Tales. We wrote everything they said on big paper. We made a list of things we want to learn about Fairy Tales.
In reading this week we read Rapunzel as a play, in parts. They thoroughly enjoyed their parts and to many this was fairy tale they had not heard of before. We finished our Beginning, Middle and End of the story identification on Monday.
Two of our groups read The Shoemaker and the Elves. Two of the groups read Jack and the Beanstalk. We had individual books for this reading. Our leveled reading books from Scholastic provide us with these oppotunities. The students love looking through the browsing boxes when they have a minute. They arefull of fairytale books. We probably have 6 versions of Jack and the Beanstalk alone.
During TNT we made Rapunzel's tower and the boys made knights. We used all those paper towel rolls you all have saved for the towers. We used the toilet paper rolls for the knights. Fraction fun in Math continues. We made our own fraction with pom poms of different colors. They could use two colors and make a fraction.
Later in the week we began measurement. I read the book Jim and the Beanstalk by Raymond Briggs. We explored inches, feet, and yard using rulers, measuring tape and rulers.
The students paired up and really got some hands on measuring experience. They measured their partners hand, feet, toes, legs, neck and head. How did they measure up compared to the giant in the story???

We made triaramas in Social Studies this week. Each student chose the fairytale they wanted to make come alive in 3- D. They are on display in the room. We had Thumbelina and Jack and The Beanstalk and Three Billy Goats Gruff represented, just to name a few.
