I am a Poet & I did not know it...

We hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day! We really enjoyed writing and creating our special gift for you!!

A special thanks to Mr. Roddy for helping us plant a butterfly garden. It was so much fun and we loved experiencing science hands on!

This week we have been busy in centers working in our Problem Solving Math Books and working on our number scrolls. They are getting longer! We have been independently creating our own flower garden just like the one we planted.

The children picked a poem out from a poetry book and copied it into their poetry journals. This was great handwriting practice. They had to illustrate the poem and give the author credit for writing the poem. They loved reading and picking out their own poem. The children also wrote shape poems, couplets and made up their own poems in their poetry journals.

Mrs. Waller worked with the children on defining what a metaphor is and then they came up with their own metaphors. The last step was to illustrate it on a sentence strip. They continued this the next day by identifying the difference between similes and metaphors. The children cut and pasted the sentences in a chart.

We played Mother's Day Games on http://www.primarygames.com/ in an independent computer center.

In a guided center with Mrs. Waller the children worked on Personal and Triante Poems. Mrs. Waller also worked with the children on personification and poetic terms to help them in their writing. The children have been continuing to work in their grammar and phonics books on their own. If we sent your child's book home have them work in them this weekend and return them to school on Monday as we will be using them in class.

With Miss Fate the children learned how to write a shape poem. They had to pick a picture illustrate it and write a poem about it in the same shape. They are hanging up on our bulletin board outside of our room. Come check them out!

Special Presentation

We had a Guest Speaker this week that came to talk to the children about bullying. This presentation was organized by Mrs. Abio.

Math

In math this week with Miss Fate the children were introduced and reviewed 2D shapes such as a circle, triangle, square and rectangle. Mrs. Waller followed up with 3D shapes with using geoboards and introducing pentagon, heptagon, octagon, hexagon and quadrilateral. To review our math skills we played subtraction bingo to help prepare us for second grade.







Social Studies

The children worked with Mrs. Waller in their theme pages and with Miss Fate on learning what a homophone is and how they can use them in their poetry. The children had to pick a homophone and illustrate it with words and pictures.

TNT (Try New Things)

We had a surprise going away party for Whitney Repine who will be moving away from St. Paul's to join her family in Knoxville, TN next year. We ate cupcakes, played games, and made Whitney a special going away book from all of her peers. We will miss them so much!Thanks to Stephanie Repine for the yummy cupcakes!!





We are going to miss first grade!!
