Out Goes September

If you asked the first graders in Mrs. Wiedeman/Ms Lorfing's class what their favorite part of the week was they would have a hard time choosing between Yoga with Mrs. Zavagnin and meeting their buddies.

We read : Make It Move, Buzz Goes the Bee, The Littles Go Exploring and Big Brown Bear in our groups.  Following our reading -- through partner read, reading to ourselves and reading softly for the teacher to hear fluency-- we discussed the beginning , middle and end of each story.

We've read a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations called, One Gorilla.  We are currently making a class book with each student taking a number and an animal of their choice modeled after this book.  We have many class books from this year and some from other years.  The students love to browse and read them.  Detail has been a focus in our own illustrations.  We have put many things in their Memory books they will bring home at the end of the year.

Starfall.com was a website they visited this week again.  We have read this year Recess Queen and My Worst Best friend.  We love these books so much we did a Venn diagram comparing the two books and their characters--all elements of the two stories.  Together the class has done Venn Diagrams for communities, friends etc... so this one-- the students did together without teacher help.  The final results were excellent.  Compare and contrast are concepts they understand fully!

Making Equations is our forte.  We learned addends and sum for our Math vocabulary.  The Doubles test information went home with the students on Thursdsay.  Let me know if you need another copy.  I know alot of information comes home each day.  We appreciate you all taking time at home to go through that Information Folder---take home folder!  We practice doubles and neighbors in math.  We made doubles an neighbors books to show how we understood this concept.  Next week we move in to Greater than and Less than.  These concepts have been introduced in kindergarten and we expand on them in first grade.

You will see the first spelling list is very easy.  We really want these first graders to get a feel for taking a spelling test the first week or two.

We finished our Family Collages in Social Studies.  We tied up our community work in Social Studies on Friday.

Edward's birthday

BUDDIES!!!!!

Our name celebration on Friday was terrific!  Thank you to Mrs. O and Mrs. D for the cookies with each student's name on them.  They were delicious!!!!  The students rotated through 5 stations.  At my station we played a name game where you say your name with an adjective that begins with the same sound as your first name and then we went around the circle.  Each student had to say their own and the person/s in front of them.  We also went around and named ourselves different names--Bob was a big one!  5 boys wanted to be named Bob.

We've had another wonderful week with your children.

Pet Blessing is Friday, October 7th and the children can bring pictures of pets if they can't bring their own or don't have one.
Halloween Ball – Monday October 31st 9:00 – 10:15 AM

The Halloween Ball is a beloved tradition at St. Paul’s for Toddler through second grade students. This year the Ball will take place in the North Wing MPR. Students will sing Halloween songs and have a chance to parade through the MPR dressed in their costumes. Parents are welcome to join us, but depending on the numbers of parents choosing to participate, parking may be limited and it will be standing room only for visitors in the MPR.

Please remember, no scary or violent costumes, including masks or weapons of any kind.
