Hanukkah!!!

Hanukkah this year was from December 20th to December 28th. After 5 days our theme this week has come to an end. We will be studying Christmas all next week. This will complete our Festivals of Light mini-theme. Can you believe how fast that went by?

Centers this week....
~Guided Reading 3 days this week with Miss Fate as we continued the book in the bag program. We also became short vowel detectives and tried to find all the short vowels in our story.

~We worked in our theme notebooks on finishing Kwanzaa pages from last week with Mrs. Waller & the kids made a "surprise" page for Miss Fate's birthday coming up this weekend.

~Guided Reading Comprehension small & big cubes with Miss Fate.  We also worked in partners to read stories in the Harcourt Brace Classroom Books.

~Art center with Mrs. Waller we made Jewish Star of David ornaments.  They are hanging up on the big Christmas tree in front of the office.

~We learned all about the menorah with Miss Fate. They thought it was really cool that Miss Fate brought in two of her own menorahs. The children were very interested in learning that Miss Fate celebrates both Hanukkah and Christmas.

~Independently, the children had a math center and have been cutting up a hundreds chart and pulling a number out of their envelopes.  They take that number and glue it in the right spot on the hundreds chart.  This really helps their number sense especially because they are pulling the numbers out of order and randomly.
~The children worked independently in their phonics books. We are working with blending letters and sounds together.
~The children listened to 3 listening centers this week and had follow up activities to complete to check their comprehension.

~They practiced their spelling words and writing them on a menorah for Hanukkah.  They also wrote some super sentences using their spelling words on the back.

~Mrs. Waller's sub worked on subtraction with pipe cleaners and beads in a center using the book "Elevator Math."

~The children colored, cut and pasted their own Hanukkah menorahs.

Math-  Miss Fate and Miss Waller want you to know that we work really hard to not only teach your children the basic concepts that need to be learned in the first grade, but to deepen their understanding of these concepts as well. It is important that we go further than the surface of these concepts so that your children truly understand why the reasons for learning what they are learning and that they can apply their knowledge in many different ways!  With Mrs. Waller we have been making pictures using step by step directions on 100's charts.  Mrs. Waller's sub worked in the Problem Solver book this week.  It helps teach the children how to use different strategies when solving problems.  Miss Fate reviewed subtraction with Tic Tac Math a partner game and cover up another partner addition game.  The children also played a strategy candle game in pairs to help them problem solve in their heads.  All three sheets came home so they could play with a parent, sibling or fun for extra practice.

 TNT (Try New Things)
The children learned the Dreidel Song. Then we split up into groups and played the Dreidel Game. It was so much fun! They kept yelling give me "Gimel!" (Hebrew letter that means give me the entire pot of coins)  Instead of using gelt, a chocolate gold coin, we used pennies.

Social Studies
We have been continuing learning all about the history of Hanukkah. They worked in their theme notebooks and watched a fact and fun short Hanukkah video from DisvoveryEducation.com. They answered the quiz and questions orally with the click of the mouse at the end of the video.  The theme pages will come home next week after we finish studying about Christmas and the Nativity.

Hands on Science this week we did a really cool experiment with Miss Fate.  Hand-On Science was a hit, yet again. The children were shown 3 white pipe cleaners, borax, a string, a pencil, a jar, and water. They were then asked to illustrate what they thought they could use these items to make. Their ideas were fabulous! Miss Fate then created a star with the pipe cleaners, tied it to the pencil, hung the star in the jar full of hot water and added borax and blue food coloring. The children have predicted what they think is going to happen.......it is now the afternoon, we are still waiting. Stay tuned!
