First Grade is Fantabulous!

This has been a short but sweet week.  To celebrate Martin Luther King Day we all made MLK tributes and wrote our own dreams.  They turned out great. Now we just need to find a place to hang them in our room.  They also were asked by Chaplain Pam Nolan to present them in chapel on Tuesday.  They did an excellent job!  In fact, they did so well, that she asked our class to help in Friday's chapel too. They were amazing! Great job first graders.

Friday's Chapel helpers!
We having been moving right along with Hooray for the U.S.A. !

In Guided Reading with Miss Fate we have been using our Social Studies textbooks & older reading textbooks. We have discussed a lot of different information including: family, community, our country, leaders, citizenship, maps & keys.

Learning to read a map...

Using a map key to make symbols on our map...

This was a group effort...
Mrs. Waller continued teaching the children about phonics.  We have been learning all about the long vowels.  Last week it was bossy "e"; this week:  "when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking!"  The children made words using letter tiles that had the long vowel sounds in them.  Mrs. Waller played The Case of the Sneaky Feet to help with the "ea" and "ee" sounds (long e) during centers.

"I spelled Titanic!!! My favorite word!" .... says, Joshua

making words.....long "a"

The children worked so hard on recopying their Famous American Research rough draft reports over for their final copy.   The reports look so nice and they children worked so quietly concentrating on their handwriting.  This took three days to complete. We can't wait for you to see them after the U.S.A. program.

Handwriting practice & working on our reports!
Independently, the children had to sort out sentence cards on paper plates. The sentences needed correction; either capitalization or punctuation.  Then, they had to write the corrected sentences on paper.

The children did a cut and paste landmark activity.  They cut up facts and glued them to the correct landmark.  Then, they had to glue their landmarks together to make a book.

Math
Mrs. Waller has been reading the children the original Flat Stanley book to prepare them for a graphing activity.  The children made their own Flat Selves for a graphing lesson.  Mrs. Waller had the children graph their flat selves according to different attributes.  They really enjoyed graphing!  The children also reviewed money and counting coins through our number corner with the date.
The book "Flat Stanley"by Jeff Brown is hilarious!  There a several in this series.  Mrs. Waller was crying reading it and the kids could not stop laughing!

Graphing

Miss Fate continued working with money and introduced number scrolls to the children.  This is a favorite first grade math project.  Every year the children talk about how much they love number scrolls. They help the children with their number sense and it is always a challenge to see who can get to the highest number.
They start at the #1 and see how high they can go......eventually maybe all the way to the thousands?

This can be harder than it looks......
Social Studies
Miss Fate taught the children about the Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Monument, The Statue of Liberty and The White House.  The children continued to present their Citizenship Reports to their classmates.   The Famous American Paper Dolls look amazing!!! We can't wait to share them with the class and hang them up in the Primary Commons down the hall by the Spanish room.

Indoor Recess Fun with an electronic machine & shapes!

America Monopoly

TNT (Try New Things) This week we made patriotic bracelets out of pipe cleaners and beads. Miss Fate put a braid in all the girl's hair with red, white and blue beads.  It was so much fun!!!  They said this was the best TNT and the boys loved making the bracelets!
The boys enjoyed making their creative bracelets too!

Bracelets are cool! Luke we missed you!
The girls modeling their braids and beads in their hair! Caroline we missed you!
Sloane had the longest braid of them all!

We went on an animal track scavenger hunt with Mrs. Waller & Mrs. Wiedeman this week in Hands-On Science. First we read Tracks in the Snow by Wong Herbert Yee and listened as a little girl followed a set of tracks in the snow, thinking about all the possible animals they could belong to....only to find out they were her very own! We then talked about several different animals tracks we might find in snow here in Missouri. We observed the various animals and their paws. The children then went on a scavenger hunt around the room and had to match up animal tracks to their animals. We had a blast! A special thank you to our parent helpers.

The students explored Cimo, a spelling app on the ipads this week in computer lab with Ms. Lorfing and Mrs. Herbers, Miss Fate's sub. The had a great time spelling second grade sight words. They also used the scanner app to scan QR codes and complete a math worksheet.  We are having so much fun with this new technology. We hope to do some really great projects with our American Paper dolls over the new several weeks.

For spelling practice this week we wrote our spelling words inside of a pizza.

REMINDERS:
*Please bring in a shoebox for your child for Valentine's Day.  It can be plain, decorated or wrapped; it is your choice.  It must have a slot on the top, the box should be able to open, the bigger size shoebox the better (it needs to hold 50 valentines). It also needs your child's first & last name on the top of it. (please don't bring into school until the week of February 6th)
*On Valentine's Day you can bring in valentines for both classes please don't write people's names on them just have your child sign their names (this will make it easier to pass them out to both classes)
*Valentine's Day Party on February 14th from 2:00-3:00pm
*Hooray for the U.S.A. performance Thursday, February 16th @9:20am in the stage MPR (children dress as their Famous American on this day)

SNACKS: Please remember to send a snack with your child to school every day. We do keep some stocked but we are running low. If you want to send some for the week, that is fine too. They can store them in the bottom of their cubby.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend.  Thank you for all your support and all you do for your children.
Miss Fate & Mrs. Waller
