Pennies from Heaven

We are using coins everyday in first grade!  We've told the kindergarten teachers they did a great job teaching value of coins to this class.  We are able to also do addition of coins.  We encourage you at have your child add coins at home.  The students worked in groups this week--some worked on matching coin pictures with words and coin amounts written; some worked on addition wipe off mats; some groups worked on coin BINGO.  All the students brainstormed how you can make amounts many different ways.  27 cents can be 2 dimes and a nickel and 2 pennies; two dimes and 7 pennies; 1 quarter and 2 pennies.  Regrouping with coins was done on our coin mats.  There is work in first grade that is hands-on work in Math every week.  It is encouraged to continue that at home.

Number Scrolls were introduced and they are going to be something the students can work on---practicing writing their numbers--throughout the rest of the year.  They love this challenge to see how high they can write.

We had a speaker, Trish Mateson come to present some valuable information on Bullying.  Bullies are not "bad" kids.  She told the students that they are kids who get pleasure from others pain.  She gave the students permission to go to the teacher when they feel they are the target.  The three kinds of Peer abuse she discussed were physical, verbal and emotional.    Effective ways of dealing with a bully are to tell them to "knock it off", give them the "look" of disapproval, expect respect,  be kind and like yourself.  These were ways of having a PROTECTIVE SHIELD up at all times.  We learned about speaking up when you see something!!!  A very important part of being friends here together is speaking up and letting someone who is being bullied know that you aren't going to stand by and let a bully talk to them that way!

In our Integrated Language Centers we are doing many things with USA as our theme.  We drew ourselves in front of the Washington Monument, we wrote about Ben Franklin's saying, "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." We wrote our spelling words on flags and put them all in a USA booklet.

Lena and Maeve using the ipad for a game with the atlas.
Owen and Nate paired up to do a game making words.  The object is to make words from the cards you are dealt.  If you need assistance there is a reserve stack.  The players get points for the words they create, depending on how difficult the words are.

All the students built sentences using color coded cards---the colors indicated nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns.

We have had a lot of practice with "first grade super sentences."  We took cards with sentences on them and sorted them on to plates according to the punction it needed or the capitalization it needed.

Our listening centers were about penguins-- "The Penguin who wanted to be Different" and "The Penguin that Wanted to Fly."

Framing long a words

Mrs. Wiedeman worked on long a sounds and long e sounds.  We learned about "bossy e" who helps the vowel say it's name!  This is continued study introduced last week.  We composed our own list of short "a" words and made the long "a" words after adding the bossy e.  ----mat and mate;  at and ate.

Birthday Kids --Sawyer, Michael and Joshua

Sacagawea
Sawyer, Elise and Ethan began sharing their Famous American Paper dolls.  They had a lot of great information about how they traced the doll to fit the clothing, how they bought beads and trim and hair, and how they found pictures from the internet.  This is a very proud moment for them to share.  These kids then gave their oral report .   Working with them on their research was time consuming but in delivering these oral reports, we realized how much each of them learned through the process.  Senora Meli has helped us tape each of them telling about their famous American and now we will make the Qr code for each paper doll.  You may use an ipad from the cart or use an app on your phone to come and listen to their little presentation.

In hands on Science this week Mrs. Wiedeman and Mrs. Waller showed an "Acid Attack" on your teeth ---approaching national Dental Month-- and that bacteria and sugar can create plaque that produces an acid attack.  We looked at how many teaspoons of sugar are in the foods we eat.  It' snot meant to scare them out of eating anything with sugar--impossible!    It's to show them that taking care of your teeth by brushing them is very important.  We dipped a penny in to an acid solution of vinegar and salt.  The acid attack on the penny cleaned the penny.
