We began the week with instructions for our centers on Monday. The children were great listeners and had to pay close attention in order to following the directions correctly. This week we attempted 5 independent centers & 2 teacher guided centers. The children rotated each day for a total of 15 independent centers by the end of the week and 6 guided centers. They followed their tic-tac-toe boards that consisted of: word work, writing & reading centers. Then, the teachers pulled different groups to read or practice handwriting. Your children did great! The transition went smoothly, it is as if they knew what to do before we explained it. We hope this will get even easier as the weeks progress.

We also introduced the listening center this week as the children listened to "Never Ride Your Elephant To School." After they listen to the book, they always complete a follow up activity to help with their reading comprehension. There is a different student every time that is in charge of pushing STOP, PLAY and REWIND at the end of the center.

Math this week:
 |
| ***The children wanted me to tell you they all want a number line just like this one above. They are from www.reallygoodstuff.com if you want to purchase one for them to practice their math facts. They can do addition and subtraction with them up to 30. |
 |
| These number lines are so cool!!! |

| The Red Dragons VS The Flame Throwing Pandas tied 9-9 |
 |
| Quotes from two kids in our class: "THIS IS THE MOST FUN I HAVE EVER HAD IN SCHOOL! THIS IS GREAT!" THE OTHER CHILD SAYS: "YES THIS IS WHAT LEARNING IS ALL ABOUT!" |
The kids expanded their knowledge of switcheroos for example: 7+1=8 & 1+7=8. Mrs. Waller did two math centers. One group shook a water bottle first. The two numbers that the soft dice landed on they had to write them in an addition equation on their paper. The next step was they then had to write the switcheroo. The other group had to pull a domino out of a pile and do the same thing & then the groups switched. They did such a great job & were not only having fun but were learning!!!
TNT- (Try New Things) We created our own self portraits with construction paper and magazine paper. Thanks to the kids that brought in some supplies. It was so much fun and we can't wait for you to see them hanging up in our room!

Social Studies---We continue also to work in our theme notebooks as we learn about ourselves, others and our caring community. This theme is such a great way to start the year as we build our own amazing classroom community. We have read the Incredible You & The Important Book. We even made a classroom book for you to enjoy!
In Hands-On Science the students learned the difference between living and non-living things. They explored this concept by cutting out various items in magazines and placing them in the right column: LIVING or NON-LIVING. As always, Hands-On Science was a hit!
In computer lab the children continued to deepen their knowledge of addition, patterns, shapes and much more as they explored the ABCya website. This is a great place for the students to go for reinforcement at home as well.
REMINDERS:
***The first graders in Miss Fate & Mrs. Waller's class have been doing an excellent job on bringing in their yellow folders each day. We are working on our life skill responsibility and they have shown a tremendous effort by returning their folders each day!
NO SCHOOL Monday, September 3rd--Labor Day!
Curriculum Night is Thursday, September 6th at 6:00pm in Fate/Waller's room for both classes and the entire first grade parents. Come & join us :)
OT SCREENINGS will be September 10th & 11th----if we contacted you through email & sent an OT form home....we will need you to turn it back to us if your child needs to be screened. ***Your teachers will recommend if you need to have your child screened.
Special note from Mrs. Haas: ***Speech screenings dates are Sept 12 and 13. Cost is $12 and includes screening articulation, language, middle ear status and hearing by audiologists and speech pathologists. We also use our clinical expertise to make observations regarding conversation and social skills, voice, and fluency.
***The forms will be mailed out about a week or so in advance of the screenings. The parents will need to return the form to the school with a check. It is a great deal for the price and very thorough. We recommend every child take advantage of this opportunity and especially the children we recommended that need to be screened. ***Your teachers will email you if we feel you should have your child screened.
Special Note from Mr. N: Great author! Should be a great time! See below....
