This week in Math we have focused on Place Value. We had multiple centers that we practiced grouping buttons in groups of ten, playing place value bingo--recognizing base ten blocks and ones in picture and numbers and using dice to write numbers.
We have introduced some rules about making words plural. This week we looked at words that end in x, ss, sh, ch, and tch. We added -es to those words.
Our focus was on -or words in our centers and with lessons. Santa will be receiving some of our letters from the students. They have come home in envelopes!

| Making winter/Christmas words with lights |
Big Susan, our class book we've read aloud, is coming to the end , just in time for Christmas. We have enjoyed this book as it is a favorite. Magical things happen at Christmas.
We are proud of Atem Akuei, our second grade student who collected over 14, 0000 pencils throughout the school over the past month. This week we had a special visit from Mr. Peter Long, father to Matthew Long, who helped secure a donation from USToy for 10,000 more pencils to bring the total to 25, 000 pencils. Atem will be traveling with his mother to Sudan over the Christmas break to bring the pencils to schools in South Sudan. He came up with this idea two years ago when his dad was sharing footage from his visit of his village in South Sudan. When Atem saw the children were writing in the dirt because they didn't have boards or pencils to write with he decided that he would share...and then ask others to share....and so on! The families at St. Paul's embraced Atem's project. He is so grateful!!!
In Science we made predictions for our experiment using borax and hot water, pipe cleaners, a pencil and string. Hmmmm! We'll let you in on the surprise on Monday! We have spent the semester talking about variables, movement of molecules and chemical reactions.
We will not be having a spelling test next week. Please make sure your child reads every night.
