Myself, Others & A Caring Community

What a fun and productive week we've had in first grade!! We began the week with instructions for our centers on Monday.  The children were great listeners and had to pay close attention in order to follow the directions correctly. We did a brief mini-lesson to review the short a sound on the smart board. This week we attempted 5 independent centers a day for a total of 15 independent centers by the end of the week.  They followed their tic-tac-toe boards that consisted of word work, writing & reading centers. Then the teachers worked with individual students for sight word testing.  The transition went smoothly and we hope this will get even easier as the weeks progress.

Here are some pictures from our week in centers:

Practicing ABC order
Writing about our first days in first grade
Write the room- what are some words you can find in our room?
Sorting sentences- do we need a period, exclamation point, or question mark?
Listening to ourselves as we read
Sorting consonants and vowels

Creating -ag, -at, -and -ap words with beans

MEANWHILE IN MATH...

Miss Fate wrapped up our study of patterns in Math on Monday with an activity where students had to create both a repeating and growing pattern with colorful pieces of pasta. We will continue to review patterns throughout the year.

The finished products were amazing!
On Tuesday, Mrs. Wyllie introduced a new math tool-- the number line! She read Ready, Set, Hop while students used their number lines to solve the problems within the story.  Number lines are a great tool for your children to use in solving addition and subtraction problems. The ones pictured below are available at http://www.reallygoodstuff.com

In Social Studies, we are continuing our theme of Myself, Others & a Caring Community. Students have been working hard on journaling in their All About Me notebook. We are learning about each other and also introduced some different kinds of community helpers such as nurses, teachers, policemen, bankers, etc. We played Community Lotto Bingo and read all about being a good citizen in our Scholastic News Magazines.

In TNT (Try New Things), we created mystery posters that includes information such as our favorite book, favorite food, and favorite hobby. Look for these at Curriculum Night on September 5th and see if you can guess your child!

In Hands on Science with Miss Fate & Mrs. Waller, we learned about the word Attribute and we sorting items from outside into the categories: pointy, rough, tiny, smooth, and light.  The kids voted on which group had which attribute.

In Computer Lab with Mrs. Wyllie & Mrs. Lorfing, we visted http://www.abcya.com again. This time, students played Sight Word Bingo and Marble Math Addition to reinforce what we are learning our classroom.
