Beautiful Poetry Abounds in 1st Grade!

Our last week of tic-tac-toe boards!  

We had the class share what their favorite activities have been on the tic-tac-toe boards this year.  So, their top 12 are what we used this week!  

We made a time capsule at the beginning of the year and now, we will fill out the same "My Favorites" page to compare how our interests have changed since the beginning of the year.  We've grown and changed so much this year!

We've been studying similes and made a simile book based on the book "As Quick As A Cricket".

Oscar's title is "Smart As A Fox".  Look at those great illustrations!

Elizabeth's title, "Fat As a Panda".  So creative!!

Lamar is listening to "The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System".

Mrs. Waller read short stories in small groups.  Then, students had to identify if the story had metaphors or similes in them by writing a "S" for simile and "M" for metaphor on their white boards.

 Anchor charts help us with our learning.  This chart below defines similes and a metaphors and gives examples.    

We took a sentence structure assessment to show all we've learned about what makes a good sentence.  It's amazing to see all the growth and skills in these first graders!  WOW!

Holden is now on his 7th 100 chart!  Writing numbers into the 700s is amazing!!

We made self-portraits at the beginning of the year.  They've been displayed inside our cubbies all year.  Now, we're making new self-portraits to compare how our illustrations have changed.  It's so cool to see the attention to detail with their pictures now!

Sophia is playing a money game to review counting change.  The focus is counting by tens (dimes) to get to 100 ($1).

We reviewed shapes this week with a shape matching game. 

We rolled a die and whatever the number is we rolled that is the amount of sides we look for in a shape.

If we found a shape with the amount of sides we rolled, we colored it in. 

A Special Farewell to Sophia!

Sophia kicked the ball to each member in our class and everyone had the chance to say what they will miss most about Sophia.

Sophia's parents brought in a yummy treat for the farwell.

We made a book with personal letters written for Sophia and then read each letter aloud to her.

We had so much fun during our read-in!  What a special celebration with a very special class!

Mrs. Waller read this very sweet book to the class.  While reading, we paused to share adjectives that described the important characters in the story.

We discussed what happens when chemicals react. We combined a nucleation site (mentos) and carbon dioxide in Diet Coke (we used diet to reduce the sticky mess that can come with sugar!)

We made predictions first to show what we thought might happen.

REMINDERS: FOR MONDAY!

FIELD DAY:

             In addition to having students wear appropriate shoes, please have students dress in comfortable/appropriate clothing that could potentially get wet during the water relay station. And of course, if you are concerned your child may get really wet, an extra change of clothes is always an option. 

·         Sunscreen: while not all of the stations are outside, a majority of the time will be spent on the field so applying sunscreen before school is recommended.   Students can also reapply before we go out in the afternoon.

Make sure to send a water bottle with your child as they will be able to carry it with them throughout the afternoon.

TUESDAY:
Student Council will be selling Gatorade and bottled water to students to enjoy during the 8th grade baseball game on Tuesday afternoon, May 20.  If your child would like a Gatorade or bottle of water please send $.75 to school on or before Tuesday.

  THURSDAY: LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
EVERYONE MUST HAVE A LUNCH & A DRINK THIS DAY AS WE WILL BE EATING IN THE ROOM.  WE WILL EAT AT 11:00 SO PACK A SNACK AND WE'LL SAVE IT FOR THE AFTERNOON WHEN WE RETURN.
ROLLER SKATING FIELD TRIP LEAVE AT 11:30...SKATE FROM 12-2PM

As we go into our last week of first grade with your children please know how blessed we have felt each and every day teaching them this year!  They are ALL very important to us and we will miss seeing their sweet faces walk into our class every day!
