Bye Bye Fairy Tales & Folktales...Hello Merry Month of May & Poetry!

We have been hard at work!

Well, we have been super  busy this week as we start our last and final unit: THE MERRY 

MONTH OF MAY & POETRY and prepare for Friday's lemonade and cookie stand. During these last few weeks of school the children are introduced to many different types of poetry and the devices poets use to create their poems. It is so much fun! Take a look at the pictures below from our week of literacy centers:

We had Mrs. Marquette a former St. Paul's teacher came and read the children a folktale story and then performed a dangerous magic trick ask your children about it. She was so nice and made them all chocolate chip cookies to eat at the end.

We were so excited to tell the Kindergartners all about first grade!!! We read them our notes we wrote them and showed them all of the exciting things we do in first grade.  It seems like yesterday we were sitting in their shoes.

TNT (Try New Things) this week we watched Frozen to end our Fairy Tale theme as we ate yummy cookies from Mrs. Hawley-Rose...we also started working on a Mother's Day Surprise so we can't tell you about it.....but it will come home just in time for Mother's Day.


During Social Studies this week we talked about supply & demand.  We also discussed prices for our lemonade stand.  We are brainstorming how much we think we should charge for cookies and lemonade.In social studies the children are learning more about poetry and how it relates to themselves and the world around them. They have also been busy marketing our lemonade stand at school and at home, as you know. We have set prices for the lemonade/cookies and a goal!  We hope to blow this out of the water and with their marketing expertise we are well on our way. We also talked about the book The Three Questions.

  We have also begun to introduce the students to a variety of problem solving strategies.  We constantly review many of the concepts we have learned about and explored this year by using a variety of math centers we have created for your children.  We even tried our Versatiles a very exciting math tool they use in second grade.

Please return any books in a bag you might find at home.  We are trying to collect them back at this time.

 

Book Swap at school May 9th

Summer Reading Book Swap!

Next week students may bring in up to 5 gently used books to participate in the 3^rd annual book swap.  Students can turn their books into their teacher Monday-Friday.  On Friday afternoon each class will browse the book collection and students can refresh their reading stash before summer vacation begins!   Please send books that are on or above your child’s grade level to ensure that all students are happy with their new read!
