First Grade News: Elements of a GREAT 1st grade class!

We are continuing on with our folk tale and fairytale theme and are becoming experts at identifying the important elements of each. Whether the tale contains magic, things in 3s, make-believe characters or a happy ending, we know that tales all use lots of creativity and imagination AND, they're lots of fun to read! Take a look at all the creative and imaginative things we've completed this week!

Jake is sorting nouns, verbs and adjectives.

Raquel is unscrambling words to make a complete sentence.

Jack is working in his phonics book on spelling words from the -own, -ow, and -oast families.

These excellent readers are working with Mrs. Waller on comprehension skills.

This guided reading group has started Literature Circles. After reading a story each child has a special job to complete for the group. These jobs help with summarizing, and comprehension skills.

Raquel is showing us she knows what homophones are and knows the different meanings of them!

Jack is putting the main events of Sleeping Beauty in the correct order.

This group is working on a review of nouns, adjectives and verbs.

David is writing a letter to a fairy tale character in our class. His letter will be signed from his fairy tale character, Little Pig #3 . He will deliver his letter to each character's very own mailbox in the room.

Lila is working on dictionary skills in guided reading with Mrs. Waller.

We are focused on our planet and what we can do to make the world a better place! Using newsprint to create artwork is one way we can reuse. Abby and David are reading about saving water and saving energy.

Lila is doing bunny math word problems.

Jack is writing sentences using his spelling words.

We reviewed 2-D shapes and used geo boards and rubber bands to show we knew how to make each shape.

SCIENCE with 7th and 8th grade Science Olympiad

Teamwork!!!
In social studies we've been working on story maps from different folk tales. Each group has been working cooperatively to plan out how they can make a map that retells the beginning, middle, and end. The maps also needed to include the title, a compass rose, a map key, the characters and the lesson learned or the moral of the story. Once these are complete, the groups will present the maps to the class. We are so impressed at how well they have worked together and can't wait to see the final products!

Kansas City Zoo Field Trip!!
We had so much fun going to the "Land Down Under", visiting the penguin exhibit and the polar bear enclosure. Our guide said our classes were so well behaved and such great listeners for 1st graders. We, as their teachers couldn't agree more!! Enjoy the pictures of our fabulous day!
