Royal November!

First grade loves the Royals!! What a great start to the week! Check out our celebration of the World Series win!

In centers this week we worked with the variant vowel /o/ a (all) and high frequency "th" words, practiced our writing skills by creating stories, reinforced growing/repeating patterns and ABC order, practiced our spelling words, and used our "phones" to hear vowel sounds.

Miss Ahrens and Mr. Ronan working with their guided reading groups.

In math this week we introduced subtraction, which we'll be revisiting all quarter. We noticed how our friends of ten and doubles skills will help us solve equations quickly! We also started working with logical reasoning word problems in our Bear Logic packets.

We worked on our brown bear theme pages in social studies this week. We talked about spectacled bears, sun bears, sloth bears, and polar bears. We also introduced our bears to each other. The names we heard in Mrs. Sansale's class were: Teddy, Maddie, Brody, Lotso, Midnight, Teddy Jr., Berry, Toboofoofumaloo, Rita, Brownie/Pickle, Champ, Banana, Steam, Mexi, Love, Rommy, Mr. Fluffals, Chocolate Hershey Bar, Christopher Jr., Eskimo, Super Bear, Armour, and Blizzard E. Davig. Ms. Lorfing's class read Who Would Win? Polar Bear vs. Grizzly.

On Thursday, Ms. Lorfing's class discovered that their bears had changed places in the night!

We made sun prints in hands-on science. We glued shapes to black construction paper and put them in our classroom windows. Next week we'll take them down and see the effects that the sun had on them! We'll be talking about the sun, light, energy, and how important these are in our lives for the next couple of weeks.

We used the iPads today in computer lab. We used our bears and the Puppet Pal app to create short videos telling the bear facts that we've learned!

We were so lucky to have Laura Huliska Beith, a fantastic illustrator, visit our chapel on Wednesday. She read The Recess Queen and showed us how to draw a couple of the characters from the book!

We also got to read with our buddies this week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROCK!!
