This
week we had 2 opportunities to practice our program with the piano
player, Mr. Lamar Simms. It helps so much to have the live music
playing as we sing!! These first graders sound so good and are almost
ready to show off their hard work to you!
Although our language arts time was cut short due to our program practices, we managed to work hard and get a lot accomplished! In first grade we know how to stay organized and work independently which allows us to do a lot of great learning activities in a short amount of time!
Practicing coin values and amounts
Listening to fun stories on the ipad.
Journal writing about the USA!
Our phonics focus this week..."When 2 vowels go walking..."
More money review.
Reviewing the difference between fiction and non-fiction books.
Practicing our spelling words with sign language.
Reviewing spelling with graffiti!
Small group work...vowel sorting games help us distinguish between different vowel sounds and enforce spelling skills.
Phonics book review
Ruby Bridges story...another important famous American!
vowel sorting independent activity
Learning about our president and monuments in our theme notebook.
WOW! Look at this great number scroll! Writing numbers well into the hundreds is a FUN 1st grade activity! How long will our scrolls become??
In Math this week we reviewed addition and subtraction facts and place value. We remembered that when we add and subtract with double digits we start in the "ones place". We also reviewed coins amounts with "Money Bingo" and worked together in pairs to come up with 4 different ways to show amounts of money using coins. We're doing such a great job learning about MONEY!!
In social studies we started sharing our research over each of our famous Americans. We stand up one at a time and share facts we've researched such as when and where they were born, childhood and adulthood interesting facts, why they are famous and why we admire them. Then, we share our famous American doll with the class. We share things like who helped us and how we made it. Before we shared with the class we took time to practice with a friend.
We learned about all the different monuments in Washington DC and learned the difference between a monument and a memorial. We also learned what a landmark is and found out what the top 10 landmarks are in the USA.
TNT
We discussed in Ms. Lorfing's class that God has a plan for all of us in our lives and it is up to us to hear His call. We then thought about what we thought God's plan is for each of us and we illustrated it. Then, we reviewed all the awesome facts we've learned in Hooray for USA with a fun game of USA Jingo!
We learned about Groundhog Day and when and why we have this "holiday". We predicted if the groundhog would or would not see his shadow on Monday. You'll see by the bar graph our results...more of us are thinking EARLY SPRING!!
In computer lab we used our famous American dolls and practiced reciting our speeches with an app called "Puppet Pals". This was great practice and they all had fun taking pictures of their dolls and creating neat backgrounds to go along with their American.
In hands-on-science we made snowflakes using pipe cleaners, hot water and Borax laundry soap. We discussed the definition of matter and what happens in a chemical reaction. We had a blast!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SOPHIA!!!
