Loving to learn about the U.S.A.!

We have had an exciting week in first grade! We're continuing our research on our famous Americans and have already started writing our reports! These kids are loving the project. Our centers reinforced our knowledge of the USA and our presidents, number sense, long vowel sounds, and spelling words.

We continued learning about the USA and our landmarks in social studies. We learned about the flag, the Liberty Bell, the Great Seal, and the bald eagle. We also talked about Martin Luther King, Jr. in social studies and during theme activity.

In math this week we continued working with money. We identified a few characteristics of each coin and learned how to write the value two different ways; all of this was recorded on our money mats. We also practiced counting and adding amounts together with Money Monkeys.

In hands-on science we learned about flight. We read about Orville and Wilbur Wright and then constructed our own roto-copters! We dropped them from the stairwell to see how well they could fly. It was a great experiment!

We made bald eagles in TNT this week.

In computer lab we used abcya.com to practice money, states, and learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr.

We had a special guest on Tuesday! Milton Gray had a wonderful presentation about character. We heard many stories that highlighted some life skills that we value and that we use every day: honesty, trustworthiness, kindness, responsibility, and integrity. At the end we heard a fun song called "Little Johnny Brown," and some volunteers got to dance!
