Practice! Practice! Practice!

What a great week! We have had so much fun practicing Bear Planet this week! We had the honor of working with Mr. Held on Monday and Tuesday. He helped us memorize our parts! He is soooooo talented! We are lucky to have him. Thanks, Mr. Held, for giving your time to us!

When we do culminating events like this it helps us learn so much. Your children are reading words they have never seen before. They are becoming great performers. Their expression is amazing! They are learning so many bear facts! They are having so much fun; they don't even realize they are learning so many different things. Most importantly, we are building such an amazing classroom community! Thank you for your support in this endeavor. It means so much to us.

On Friday Mrs. McCarthy came in to give Mrs. Waller a crash course in face painting before next week's performance. Please know that we have choosen certain bears to be face painted because of the qualities of those bears that need to be highlighted. Thank you, Mrs. McCarthy for helping out with this. Thanks to Maggie for being such a great helper as well! Here is a sneak peak:

In centers this week we continue to learn our bear facts. We created a Spectacled Bear Fact Book that will be coming home soon. Mrs. Waller has practiced bear parts with the children, they are doing so well. They sorted bear facts and have written a bear story with Miss Fate. They created the beginning, the middle and the end of a story with her guided help. We continue to explore their artistic side as they created a bear scene on newsprint. They have also made Polar Bears and Pandas as well! They were given Bear Information Boxes to complete independently. Each box had a letter of the alphabet. The children had to think of a word that had to do with bears for each letter of the alphabet and then write it in the box. This is a challenging activity. The children all did well. We will do this activity again in the future. We also created spelling spirals while practicing our spelling words. Thanks to Mrs. Peterson and her Aunt who assisted us in this center! We continued working on our writing Thursday, as we created our own Important Stories. We used Margaret Wise Brown's book (the author of Goodnight Moon), The Important Book to help guide our writing. The student chose topics such as books, teachers, America, snowflakes, etc. They wrote the most important thing about their topic and followed it up by writing two very great details. They ended up with amazing stories. We can't wait to share them with you.

In Math the students used their teddy bears. We sorted their teddy bears according to their different attributes. For example: those with bows v. those without bows, those that are all brown v. those that are all white. After we sorted our bears according to their attributes, we looked at each individual category and assessed your child's knowledge of greater than and less than. In the bow category there were 12, in the category of bears without bows their were 9, so 12 > 9. The students had greater than/less than signs to hold up. They all seem to be doing extremely well with this concept. Your children enjoyed using their teddy bears in a lesson! Miss Fate introduced a picture graph to the students on Wednesday as they compared how many of them have dogs and how many of them have cats. On Thursday Mrs. Waller introduced the concept of the missing addend (ex: 4 + __ = 6). She used Stuart J. Murphy's book, Safari Park to introduce this concept. This is a hard concept and they got it! FYI: Stuart J. Murphy is a great author who has written several great mathematical books. You should check him out.

In Hands-On Science, Miss Taylor and Miss Waller helped the students create a bear habitat. By using construction paper, a brown paper bag, scissors and glue the students got to actively create their own forest habitat. They had so much fun while learning that a habitat is a place where plants and animals live. A habitat has food, water, air and gives shelter to those plants and animals that live in it.

In computer lab this morning the students explored:
They played math and reading games on funbrain and then explored the puzzle and mazes on kidzone. Maybe you could check these out over the weekend.
Thank you so much for the support you have shown our food pantry. Currently our class is in 2nd place, but we are only behind by 3 points! There is still time! Of course, the competition is all in fun as we remeber the true reason behind this amazing collection of food.
