The Statue of Liberty and our United States flag were our focus this week for discussions. In one of our centers we read about Betsy Ross. We had excercises in how to take care of our nation's flag. We learned some of these rules like the United States flag should fly higher than any other flag, a light should be shining on the flag if it flies at night and how to lower a flag slowly and raise it swiftly. Senator Yvonne Wilson came to our first grade and talked about being a good citizen. She shared her flag blanket with the Missouri seal and the United States seal on it. She gave each of the students a flag of their own and a book with all the Missouri symbols in it. Her message of hard work and being a good person will stay with these kids forever. 
One student reported the next day that she learned by looking through the book, given by Senator Wilson, that the state instrument is the violin. Megan plays the violin and she thought that was very special that she plays the state instrument.
Coins, Coins, Coins are a focus. We looked at different characteristics of the coins again and did some addition of tens (dimes) and ones (pennies). Adding different coins like dime, penny and quarter together takes some practice
. 
In Science we did a wonderful activity where the children tried to match which prints of animals tracks went with what animal. They had so much fun with it.
Tommy had a birthday! A big 7 years old.
We loved recess this week! We are excited to see if the ground hog sees his shadow this next week.

We made our own sentences in groups today. The different sheets had nouns and adjectives on them and the students selected 6 words to create their own sentences.
