Our Great Nation

Students are continuing their study of our great nation by sharing their Citizenship Reports, researching a state they are interested in learning more about, reading interesting facts about the White House and listening to another great guest speaker, Senator Yvonne Wilson.

Senator Wilson, a retired educator, shared some fascinating information about being good citizens with our students. She also educated the teachers by informing us that the current site of St. Paul's once was Rollings School and she taught there. She left students with two key points about being good citizens...

  1. work hard; and

  2. play by the rules
Our students are learning so much about the nation in which they live. Their retention of the information and their interest continues to increase daily.

In Math, we continue to review and practice numeracy, skip counting, computation, fact families, graphing, reading the calendar, and patterns. As we teach money concepts, students are beginning to link previously learned concepts like counting by 10's, 5's, and 1's. They are realizing that they are practicing addition when "adding" coin combinations. They are understanding that the concepts that they have and will continue to learn are greatly connected to one another and makes their understanding of math much easier.

Individual students are being continuously challenged and extended when they need to be through small group instruction and it is proving to be advantageous to students and teachers. Some students had the opportunity to plot points/coordinates on a graph and create an outline of a state. This proved to be fun and challenging.

Will He or Won't He?

Students have become familiar with the legend of the groundhog. Through an informative video, books, graphing project, and a craft, they have learned about this furry wild animal that will emerge from hibernation this coming week. PLEASE, PLEASE don't let your child listen to the radio or watch television on Wednesday, Feb 2 prior to coming to school. We want to do a class reveal to find out if we will have an early spring or 6 more weeks of winter.

In Computer Lab, students were given their first Web Quest. A Web Quest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by students is online. By providing links necessary to complete the quest, the student is able to focus on the material being studies rather than spend time looking for it. It also allows us to keep students from seeing of the rather mature material that can be found on the Internet by mistake. They are studying some basic facts about a state they have chosen to learn more about. They will then give a brief report to their classmates about the state. Check out this link to learn more! http://webquest.org/

In chapel, the topic was TEMPTATION...students learned that things and people can tempt us to forsake what we know to be "right" and choose the wrong path. Through songs, skits, and discussion, students were reminded that none of us will choose the right path ALL the time, but with God we can find the strength to do what is right when tempted most of the time!

We have enjoyed our parent helpers tremendously this year. Not only have they been working hard in the classroom, they have also been our guest readers. The kids love it!
