Centers
All week the children have been reading some poetry to get an idea of rhythm pattern and how to create a mental picture full of feelings and ideas. They learned how to write letter poems and wish poems with Miss Fate this week. With Mrs. Waller taught them how to write Haiku & Limerick poems. Since we are down to the wire the kids have been working hard in their grammar and phonics books. They will come home next week. If they have any pages to finish they would make great practice and review for the summer.
Math
Miss Fate has been working with the children on their problem solving books & 3D shapes. The children used shape manipulatives to create different objects and to identify the different shapes. Mrs. Waller had the children do a shape scavenger hunt where they walked across the room and found different 3D shapes. Mrs. Waller reviewed place value using popsicle sticks to represent the tens and the ones place. She also reviewed the 100's boards/charts with the children. The kids continued to work with geoboards and rubber bands to show the different shapes. The tricky part was transferring it over to paper. They did some shape logic puzzles and continued to learn a new dot logic game. Ask them to show you how to play it. It is a great strategy game. The loved making shapes with their shape checklist with clay. If you are looking for a good indoor activity for your children buy some clay. They made an ice cream shop and a Royals Stadium when they finished making shapes. See the pictures below...
Social Studies
With Miss Fate the children made a beautiful tissue paper flower craft. They look beautiful hanging up in the back of our room. Their poetry theme pages will come home next week make sure to praise them on all of their wonderful efforts!! You won't believe how well they are writing!!
Science
The children learned all about matter with Miss Fate. They read miniature science books on their own and answered questions about matter, gases, solids and liquids.
Spelling
There will not be a spelling packet or test the last week of school.
TNT- try new things... (The first graders told the Kindergartners that TNT is not a bomb! ha ha!)
We went outside as a class and played two different group games. The first one was called community juggle. The children were divided into two groups. Each group was with a teacher. The teacher would start the ball and throw it to another person as they say their name. That person would catch the ball and toss it to another person while saying their name. This continued all around the circle. As the children started to get the hang of it the teachers would add another ball. We attempted to juggle about 3 to 4 balls at a time. It was so much fun and helped us to all work together cooperatively! The other classroom game we played to end the year was a hula hoop teamwork game. We timed how long it took us to get the hula hoop from one person to the next with out letting go of our hands. Each child had to step through the hula hoop and then help their friends as quick as they could get the hula hoop over their heads. Our classroom time to beat was two minutes. The pictures below might give you a better idea of the games.
Hands on Science with Miss Fate
The children sorted objects into two different groups to determine whether they sink or float. Then we had a class discussion about the types of material that usually float or sink. Objects made of wood or plastic usually float and objects made of metal will usually sink. As an extension, we had the children change a ball of clay from a sinker to a floater by changing its shape into a boat. This is how we explained that sometimes the shape of an object can affect whether it sinks or floats.
Computer in the Classroom
The children played math games to review the shapes concept. They played building blocks and shape inlay on www.primarygames.com under the math section.
The kindergartners came to visit the first grade. The first graders gave them great advice to prepare them for next year. They read them letters they wrote telling them all they need to know about first grade. Our favorite advice... that an "anonymous" first grade gave was... in Kindergarten you get to play but in first grade you have homework and actually have to work hard. Some more advice from a first grader...was the only time you can play with Lego's in first grade is if it is raining or snowing outside and we have to have indoor recess. It was very cute!
Miss Stepenson brought the chicks from Kindergarten for us to play with during Social Studies. It was so much fun we could hold them, pet them or just look at them.
Computer Lab with Waller & Wiedeman
They played on http://www.funbrain.com/ and picked their own words to use in Mad Libs. They will be bringing them home to read to you.
