Passing the first grade torch

The highlight to this week was definitely the visit from the present Kindergarten. They paired up with a first grade friend and made a great button picture. We also had an opportunity to give the kindergarteners one piece of advice. They had no questions and no fears!!!

In Integrated Language we wrote Wish poems with Mrs. Wiedeman. They wished to own candy stores, toys r us, to fly, to have pools, and to be animals. Some of the students had a hard time thinking of things they wish for because they are very content in their lives and so we had to stretch. All of the students stretched to think of fantastical things they wish for.

We worked on a homophone identification and illustration paper. We learned about Limericks this week and composed our own. The sequence of words are syllable based. They are usually nonsensical and rhyming 1, 2, and 5th line and 3 and 4 lines.

My, how these first graders can predict now! In Science we predicted which items would sink and which would float in a tub of water. We each had a tub of water on our table and wrote our predictions on white boards. We tested each item to see if it would sink or float. There were some surprises like a paper clip, a plastic fork and a rubberband....these items were the surprises! What do you think???

We introduced this experiment by spending a day on what is matter? We all know that matter takes up space.
During TNT we made a quilt with all different shapes. They are beautiful. Mrs. Marquette had millions of shapes and sizes of construction paper to chose from. Just look at two of the examples of this project.
In Math we continued our investigation of shapes.

We know our triangles, squares, circles, spheres, hectagons, octagons, pentagons, and rectangles, cylinders, cones and pyramids!!!
The problem solving books that come home this week are good practice over the summer. There are some pages not complete that can be worked on.

http://www.funbrain.com/ ---the students wanted me to make sure I include this int he information I give to you. They liked making Mad Libs and playing other games on this site.

It's been a wonderful year

Full of growth and belly laughing cheer

To see these bright faces

Before they get braces

I'll never, ever forget them I fear!

I do love your children. My bucket has been filled with their notes, smiles, tears, hugs, laughter, enthusiasm, reading, skipping, swinging on the jungle gym like monkeys, twirling on the thingy-ma-bob on the playground, soccer tears, their excitement over their lunches, the inclusion of our new students, their parts in chapel, their eagerness to take on another day, their inner beauty and pure innocence. They have made me so extremely happy for TWO years!!!

Over the summer Mrs. W is going to figure out why the spacing on my blog page is so random! Before I publish it, it looks fine and then I publish it and it puts all these spaces in it.

Someone asked me what I'm going to do this summer. With one child in activities that needs me to drive him and support him and two older children on their own, I have a plan.

I have been a swim chair, a golf chair, and pre-compet chair and this summer I am going to be a" lounge chair!!!"

I'm so psyched!

Don't let these darling babies grow up, please!!!
