The first week of Fall

We never out grow the magic of wet sponges and dark surfaces!!!!

We are using the Handwriting without Tears program.  It is the same program these kids used in Kindergarten.  We began practicing two weeks ago and we use language like, " Big line, little line...big curve, little curve" to describe the shape of what they are to do.  This week we worked on the mini chalkboards with wet sponges and practiced our lower case letters.

In Math we begin each class with a Problem Solving worksheet.  The skills we have gone over in class so far are -- using or making a table, using a picture or diagram, using logical reasoning, and making an organized list.
The class made a pairs and dozens book after brainstorming all the things that come in pairs.

The excitement of our class pet--"short sticks"  continues as we wait patiently for the butterfly to emerge from the chrysalis.  Meanwhile, Molly brought her own butterflies that had emerged from her home chrysalis.  She had 5 butterflies to release and wanted the class to be part of that fun.  It was so GRAND to see!!

Some of their wings were wet and stuck together, from the sugar water...they dried out and took off!

Beautiful!!!

Firefighters came to talk to the first grade during our community helpers unit.
Question and answer including does Santa Claus come to the firehouse???

Mrs. R helped us make our Family Trees in Language Centers this week.  It tickled when she painted our palms.  Each palm print represented a member in our family. We actually had permission to get paint on our arms and hands!!!WOW!!!
