Myself, Others & A Caring Community

Miss Stefanie Heifner

Connor
We want to give a warm welcome to our student teacher Miss Stefanie Heifner. She will be with us now until mid October. We would also like to welcome back a former St. Paul's student and new student in our class Connor. We are so lucky to have him in our class!!

Our first theme is Myself, Others & A Caring Community.  We will be studying this until September 30th.

***The first graders in Miss Fate & Mrs. Waller's class have been doing an excellent job on bringing in their yellow folders each day. We are working on our life skill responsibility and they have shown a tremendous effort by returning their folders each day!

In Social Studies we are talking about what is important to each one of us as a part of our new theme Myself, Others & A Caring Community. The children have presented about "How They Got Their Names." The students love learning information and new things about one another.

In Math we have been working on rote counting, even/odds, tally marks, addition, number lines and patterns. We have also learned about the difference between a repeating and a growing pattern. We have used objects, unifix cubes, manipulatives, buttons, frogs and pattern blocks to help us with our Math.

Our new magnetic number line :)

In Language Arts we have had many hardworking centers going on in our two hour block. We have started assessing sight words, reading in context & answering comprehension questions. This will continue for the next couple of weeks.

Using sponges... this is so fun!

Hands on Science was a "HIT" last week with the Alka Rockets Mrs. Waller & Mrs. Lorfing did last Friday. This Friday the children learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly. The children used pasta to represent the different stages. It was so much fun!!!

Computer lab last week was with Miss Waller & Mrs. Wiedeman and the children learned how to log on and log off the computers. They did a fun pattern activity for extra practice on the program Kidspiration. We used the computers today to expand their knowledge and to go along with what they are learning in Math. This week in the computer lab we practiced sight words and skills with educational games at http://www.abcya.com/ Click on 1st Grade. Make sure to scroll down to see all the different subjects and games you can play.

Homework:
*Just a few reminders: If your child has a reading log from books they read over the summer, please send it with your child so we can recognize these students during chapel. If you have lost the sheet you can just write the titles of the books on a piece of paper and bring it in to us. In the next week or so, please make sure that you have reviewed with your child about “How I Got My Name” and make sure the sheet is filled out and turned in to us. Parents can write in the information for the child and we can prompt them. We will be presenting them to the class as they are turned in. You can start working on your family collage. Please return them when they are finished so we can hang them up in our room. We can't wait to see you next week on curriculum night. Don't forget to sign up for your FALL & SPRING conferences on that night.

***Speech & Hearing sign up forms will come out in the mail soon and the children will be screened on September 12th. This is a great service offered at St. Paul's. Please turn in any OT forms we sent home if your child needs to be screened.

**THE CURRICULUM PACKETS WILL BE ONLINE THIS YEAR.  WE WILL NOT HAVE HARD COPIES AT CURRICULUM NIGHT WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE  PAPER. PLEASE READ THROUGH OURS ONLINE AT http://www.speds.org/.

Thank you for your support!
