The First Week of First Grade

Welcome to First Grade Parents and Students. This Blog is a great tool in communicating with you the week we had with pictures.

Ms. Lorfing and I welcomed your children with joy. The week proved to be a good time to get to know the room and the new routines with specials. The good news is we are right next door to Spanish and chapel, the bad news is we have to walk further to lunch. This week we also became familiar with the manipulatives in the room, our cubbies, hot lunch ordering system and our jobs. A webbing game helped us learn each other's names and what was unique about our summer. Summer for these first graders included swimming, visiting churches with beautiful stained glass windows, visiting Florida with relatives, going to Ireland, Hawaii, and sleeping in an old light house and more. I overheard one conversation this week that I must pass on to you. One student said to another, " I like first grade and I didn't think I would, do you?" I immediately thought of this transition time for these students. It is a year of huge growth and change. We don't "pile" on the homework like I think they believe.
We do ask that their homework folder be opened and checked every night because there are important notes, homework, and returned work in that folder.

In the August letter with carpool information etc... was your Speds website log in password.

Please also sign up to follow the blog by email. On the blog you will find the place to enter your email in the right column. A confirmation email will come to you to verify. After that you get an email that tells you when an entry has been posted. I would appreciate you doing that. Thanks.

Please note: The Halloween Ball has been changed to Monday, October 31st. You are welcome to come but there is very little room because of the number of students and teachers that come to parade.
Plan to attend Curriculum Night here in the First grade on September 8th at 6:30.

Freddie cutting his painted watermelon.

At the end of Wednesday, a very hot day indeed, we went outside to enjoy some refreshing watermelon chunks.

Sawyer loved exploring the math manipulatives in the room.

We all got to play with ALL the new things in the room.

These first grade teachers felt so good about our week. We know we sent them home tired and hungry. We are all adjusting to school instead of the pool.

We are continuing our theme Myself, Others, and a Caring Community and reviewing patterning in Math.

On Monday we will send home a FUN parent directed assignment to make a collage about your family. They will be posted in the room all year.

We hope you have had great conversations about your child's name for the assignment called "How I Got My Name"

Enjoy the week.

Mrs. Wiedeman and Ms. Lorfing
