A TERRIFIC THIRD WEEK!

We began the week with our centers on Monday. This week we attempted four centers and your children did great. The transition went smoothly, it is as if they knew what to do before we explained it.

Miss Fate worked in centers with the students as they reviewed rhyming words, opposites and other word work. Miss Heifner continued her work with ABC order, she introduced the children to their Phonics Books and introduced the computer center as well. The students were also introduced to their Grammar Books as they worked hard this week.  Mrs. Waller read I Went Walking by Sue Williams (I went walking. What did you see? I saw a black cat looking at me). The students then created and illustrated their own version of this book. Their writing is improving greatly and their illustrations are close behind.

I went walking.....
They worked well in their Grammar books!

She is hard at work!
Mrs. Waller also continued her Handwriting Without Tears lessons as a basic review of handwriting. The children get to work with tiny chalk boards and wet sponges to help make handwriting so much more fun. They are having a blast!

 We also introduced the listening center this week as the children listened to Franklin Goes to School. After they listen to the book, they always complete a follow up activity to help with their reading comprehension. There is a different student every time that is in charge of pushing STOP, PLAY and REWIND at the end of the center.

Their tally scavenger hunt....
Addition Equations
In Math this week we continued our work with tallies as the students tallied all different items around the room.  They also created their own math equations with stickers and expanded their knowledge of odd and even numbers and what things come in PAIRS!

Stickers = Equations

In Social Students the students finished presenting their HOW I GOT MY NAME information. We continue also to work in our theme notebooks as we learn about ourselves, others and our caring community.  This theme is such a great way to start the year as we build our own amazing classroom community.

In TNT, Miss Fate guided the children as they learned how to draw people, step by step.  The children did such a great job and loved this activity. The packet we used to teach this has come home with them so they can continue their artistry at home. Some of us think we cannot draw, but if you practice and follow steps, you will be surprised!

In Hands-On Science the students learned the difference between living and non-living things.  They explored this concept by cutting out various items in magazines and placing them in the right column: LIVING or NON-LIVING. As always, Hands-On Science was a hit!

Chomper is fitting right in!
ALSO! Please stop by and come visit our classroom caterpillar that Mrs. Waller brought in from her garden.  We brainstormed an interesting list of names and took a vote. The winner is: CHOMPER over PRETTY PINK PONY!

In computer lab the children continued to deepen their knowledge of addition, patterns, shapes and much more as they explored the ABCya website. This is a great place for the students to go for reinforcement at home as well.
