Bear Country

This week we welcome a new student to our class.  Brady H. is a new boy that has brightened our room.  He is so happy to be here.  We are equally happy he is here.  We have been so impressed with how flexible he is and on top of it the family is.  His collage was in the second day he was here.

The first grade teachers are silly about BEARS...we introduced our song for the play, Bear Planet and told the studnets we are now studying bears.

The students impressed us with their prior knowledge of Bears.  We did a K-W-L with the class and recorded everything they know already.  We encouraged the students to bring in their favorite bear from home.  Sometimes we take them out to recess to play even.  It's not too late to bring their bear.  Presently Mrs. Wiedeman is reading one of her favorite books of all time during quiet time.  The book is Big Susan.  In this book, one magical night the Doll family comes alive in Susan's dollhouse.  We are wondering if our bears will comes alive this weekend while we are out of the room.

During math this week we learned about missing addends.  We played a fun different version of "Go Fish".  Each child had 3 cards in their hand.  After looking at their own cards they then asked a friend in their small group if they had a number card that when added to theirs would equal 10.  So if I had a 3 card, I would ask my friend for the missing addend: 7.  If he/she had it, I got a match, if not, I had to "go fish" and pick a card from the deck.  The class worked really well and we were so impressed on how quickly they learned this strategy!  Not to mention the FUN!!

Then, we made missing addend books with dot stickers.  They each were given a different sum and then they came up with their own equations and showed them with the dot stickers.  WOW!! These first graders really know their addition!

Pets for Life have a program called the Leash Pals.  They were kind enough to come to SPEDS first grade and tell us about how to approach a dog and let us ask questions.  We had Lola, Rosie and Sunny come with their owners.  The ladies said this was the most well-behaved group they have visited in a long time.
