It was a PERFECT day for the Pumpkin Patch!

We had a blast at Carolyn's Country Cousins Pumpkin Patch on Tuesday. We got to see pigs, goats, peacocks, chickens and turkeys, to just name a few. We learned all about different types of pumpkins and how they grow. We also went on a hayride and got to pick out our perfect pumpkin. It was the perfect day for our field trip, the sun was shining and the sky was blue. We ate lunch and got an extra long recess on their amazing playground. Thank you to all the parents that were able to join us.

Can we try & get these St. Paul's colored tires for our playground?

Future illustrators!
We have stayed very busy in centers. Mrs. Waller introduced the kids to the great book, WILD ABOUT BOOKS by Judy Sierra, illustrated by Marc Brown. In this wonderful book, Molly McGrew, the Springfield librarian, mistakenly drives her bookmobile into the zoo.  The authors tells about all the crazy things the animals do....of course, they all end up loving books. Your children then got to pick their favorite animal out of the book, write three descriptive clues about their animal and illustrate their work.  We are working on adjectives and talking about how to write exciting sentences that won't put our readers to sleep. They are doing so well with their writing!

QUIZMO!
We continue guided reading as well. Miss Heifner played QUIZMO, a phonics/bingo game. The children have also worked independently in their phonics books. Columbus was the topic of another independent center.  The children have also been guided in their theme notebooks as we continue learning all about bears. To help the children with their spelling this week, we stamped our spelling words with our new stamps and played SPARKLE. They loved both of these activities. We continue our listening centers as well. Miss Fate also returned to the classroom and started the kids on their first Halloween story......we will save them to share with you at conference time.

Stamping our spelling words!

In Math, Miss Heifner introduced the concept of greater than, less than. This is a review and the children seem to understand this concept well, in first grade we are now working to expand and deepen this knowledge.

Mrs. Waller took the kids on a trip to SAFARI PARK! (a book by Stuart J. Murphy)  In this book all of the children are given 20 tickets to ride rides, eat treats, or play games. We worked through all of the equations and found the missing addends!

On Thursday, we sorted our bears according to different attributes and looked at which attribute had more or less than the other attribute.

In Social Studies and Science we continue to learn about bears and their habitats.  Monday we also learned several interesting facts about Columbus and the children learned how to draw a ship. These drawing activities were sent home. They love them, so encourage them to finish them at home (This is not required!)

In TNT on Wednesday we put together our scarecrows that we had been working on independently in centers. There are several steps to this process...please come see the finished work in our room!

Happy Fall!
Zach and Drew after the big run!
Computer lab and Hands-on Science we canceled this week due to the Buddy Run. We had such a great time showing our spirit. We practiced our chants at recess (in a top secret way) and loved every minute of it! Thank you to all of the parents that helped us get ready for the big day.  Thank you also to Miss Heifner for painting our St. Paul's letters. We showed plenty of spirit up on the field. Activities like this help only make our classroom community even stronger!
