Carolyn's Pumpkin Patch
Our filed trip to Carolyn's Pumpkin Patch was fantastic.  The weather was perfect and so were the kids.  Each child had fun finding the perfect pumpkin to take home.  Our two friends Thomas and Owen couldn't be with us so we brought a pumpkin home to them.  We rode to the fields together in a hayride wagon.  We ate our yummy lunches outdoors and went through the petting zoo.  The most fun of all was the playground at Carolny's Pumpkin Patch.  Thank you to the parents who drove out to meet us there.

This week in Math we did a variety of things.  We shared some of the Missing addend books from last week that we didn't have an opportunity to share.  The Number Eating Alligator paid another visit to our room.  He ate up all the bigger numbers through 30.  Some students worked on expanded form of numbers.     Of course, as we do everyday, we practice our problem solving skills.  The strategy we were on this week was Use of Look for a Pattern.   We have covered using logical reasoning, making an organized list,  guessing and checking, and now using a pattern.  This gives the students a great understanding of how to break down a word problem.  They come home every day , so you have seen them in their folders.

Columbus Day was Monday.  We had short clip from Discovery education on why we celebrate Columbus Day.  We know that Columbus brought back to the Americas among other things: sweet potatoes, corn and pineapple.

Ms. Lorfing did another lesson on what makes a good sentence.  We are getting them ready for their Haunted House stories.  She emphasized the use of upper case letters to begin the sentence and the end mark.  Ms. Lorfing also had the students practice their spelling words by writing them in dictated sentences.  They made a dot under each letter to check.

Alphabetizing spelling words

When we get ready for Handwriting, we ask the students to put their fingers under their seats and rock back and forth on their fingers to stimulate them.  We work on posture and we use golf pencils that are a perfect size.  Many times we practice on blackboards with wet sponges.  Magic "c" is an important letter to know because "o" and "a" and others are formed from practicing magic "C" .

Our reading groups read Cloudy Day, Gloomy Day in which we discovered contractions.  We will work on contractions more this coming week.    We finished Shoe Town, that reminded us of several fairy Tales.
We began The Schoolyard Mystery.  Just in time for Halloween our friend in the story is invisible.  What kind of mischief do you think he can get in to at school??  We read to ourselves using our phones.  The students loved using these becuase they whisper read and their voices are louder in the phones.

Scarecrows are terrific...at least in our room!   We had a week of geat weather and I thought I'd publish the recess fun we see everyday.

BUDDY RUN 2011
Not only did First grade and seventh grade buddies win the first place award for spirit...I won the faculty drawing for a cool bag of Spirit wear !!!!
Live a minute in our shoes at the Buddy Run!  Enjoy....

We've got Spirit, we've got spirit!!!!

We have a celebration lunch with Mr. Kurt and Mrs. Shurtleff on the upper field next Friday to say Way to Go first and seventh grade!!!!

All the students have done so well on the Spelling tests.  Keep up the good work at home.  Will does the Spelling city activities every week.  It's amazing to see the work he puts in to the weekly preparation.

Thanks for sharing your children with us.  We love and care for them for you , for a little chunk of each day:)
Mrs. Wiedeman and Ms. Lorfing
