| Guided Reading |
This has been another busy week for Fate & Waller's first grade class! We had three centers on Monday which included: Guided Reading & book in the bag with Mrs. Waller, Working on short vowel sounds with Miss Fate and in the Phonics book, and the children independently working on their fine motor skills using Kid Pix Deluxe 4 art program on the computers. We managed to squeeze a rehearsal practice in with Mr. Held in the morning. In Math on Monday, Miss Fate continued working with Cuisenaire rods and the children used a code to figure out which two rods they have to add together to make a train. Then they had to figure out which rod equals the value of their train. After they used the rods to transfer their information the children had to come up with a number sentence. This was a great following directions activity. After all our specials we still fit in another practice in the afternoon this time the kids performed on stage with Mr. Held on the piano.

On Tuesday, we had three centers again. Mrs. Waller continued to work with the children on guided reading. Miss Fate continued to work with the short vowel sounds. We used little tubs with small items in them to represent each vowel sound. The children worked on spelling practice independently. They wrote the words in different colors all around a spiral. It is harder than it looks and takes practice turning it the correct way. We managed to squeeze in going upstairs to visit our buddies in the special Wax Museum of the American Revolution. The older kids dress up and put on a museum for the parents and for us to visit. It was so cool as they stayed still we would touch their hands and listen to them talk. For Math today Mrs. Waller introduced subtraction to the kids. Although they are familiar with this concept we start from the basic crossing things out and we work our way up to harder subtraction. In the afternoon, we practiced and rehearsed for our Bear Planet play. This is Mr. Held's last year with St. Paul's so we will really miss him!

Wednesday the children had three centers again. With Miss Fate the children learned the difference between a telling, asking and exclamation sentence. This was reinforced with our Grammar books. Mrs. Waller kept the book in the bag program going with guided reading in her center. The children did a reading activity with Mrs. Waller. They will not take home a book on Thursday because we don't have centers on Fridays. Independently, the children worked with blend digraph cards on their own.

On Thursday this week the children they will get a new book on Monday. Bear Planet play was a success what a fun way to end a great theme! The children were marvelous and so cute in their bear costumes. We hope you too learned some new facts about bears. Thank you for all your hard work on practicing their parts with them and helping them with their costumes. A special thanks to Mrs. Waller who organized and arranged all the costumes and programs. Miss Fate taught a hands on Science lesson called the Gummy Lab. The children measured a Gummy Bear and then dropped it into a cup of water. We are leaving it in the water over the weekend to see what happens....to be continued.

*With even a small commitment during these past two weeks, you have had a HUGE effect on the fight against hunger. We are making a difference in the lives of others. We are helping to carry the pantry items over today. We are going to try and take the children over to tour the pantry next week so they can see how they have contributed with their own eyes. Thanks be to God! We can’t thank you enough!!!
