SURPRISE THE TEACHER
This week students will use their Famous American's first and last name.
This week we began our study of America and practiced our writing skills with our Jumbo Journals by writing important facts about the United States.
We focused on the history of our country when the US consisted of just 13 colonies. We learned why those colonies were formed and the order in which they eventually became states.
We also found out what Famous American each first grader gets to research and report on to the class as well as dress up to portray him/her for our "Hooray for the USA' performance on Feb. 16th.
In TNT we learned who Uncle Sam was and what he symbolizes to Americans.
Ms. Lorfing shared her 13 colonies porcelain dolls she has kept from childhood. Each one has an attached description of the doll's name and what life was like in the colony.

In math we spent time reviewing addition and subtraction and worked on place value. We made houses that represented the ones and the tens. Ask your child what happens when the ones house gets too crowded!
In Hands On Science we found out how many drops of water fit on a single penny. We learned the definition of surface tension and cohesion. Ask your child to define for you!
IPADS!!
During computer lab we got a chance to work on 4 different apps which helped us review addition and subtraction facts as well as learning facts about the states and presidents. It was so much fun to use our new technology!!
FRIENDLY REMINDERS:
Citizen reports due: Tuesday, Jan.10th
Paper dolls will come home Tuesday for students to dress as their Famous American. Please let us know if you have any questions about either assignment.
