Hard At Work!

Well, we have done it! The children have completed their very first research project. We worked hard to guide the children and teach them how to select the most important information.  They will re-copy this first draft next week and soon be ready to present the material to their friends! How exciting.....take a look at a few of the pictures below. Your children have really enjoyed completing this task.

Elvis hard at work!

Also in centers, we have worked on the phonics skill, bossy "e"! When the silent/bossy e is added to the end of a word, it bosses the vowel around and makes it say its name (ex: hat turns into hate and mat turns into mate). We have completed a bossy "e" hunt in our books. The students have also illustrated a variety of words before the bossy "e" arrived and after the bossy "e" showed up. We watched two different videos about this rule. We have officially exhausted the bossy "e". Be on the look out for bossy "e" words in your homes. They have had a blast hunting for them.

Using the bossy "e" wheel to illustrate words before and after the bossy "e"...

The children have been working hard in the U.S.A. journals. Their handwriting is improving everyday. Their illustrations are improving as well. This week we did the Statue of Liberty, The Liberty Bell and The American Flag. These will come home at the end of the unit. They will be fun to look through.

They have also worked on U.S.A. puzzles, placing presidents in alphabetical order, and they have continued to review their math facts with magnetic numbers.

Magnetic numbers and the abacus....some of our great math tools!
Placing the presidents in alphabetical order!
A completed puzzle of the presidents....it was a hard one!

In math we have reviewed place value and introduced money. They love playing with money and already have a great grasp on this concept. On Thursday the children were paired up and turned into money detectives.  They were given a clue about a certain coin and then had to go search and find the coin with their partner. The had so much fun with this activity. We will continue to work with money through the end of the year so they will be more than ready to move on to second grade.

Money detectives! So much fun....

Evie is on the hunt for the special coin.

The COIN SONG!

Take a look at the video clip below:

We used this clip to reinforce the introduction of money. The students loved it! We are already making plans for another big performance involving your talented children as they sing, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!

In social studies the students learned about the American Flag and have practiced drawing it and coloring the correct number of red v. white stripes. They have also begun presenting their citizenship papers that they discussed with you at home. We are enjoying listening to their reports.  Soon these will be typed up and on display for you to see. We have also been learning a medley of American songs for our big performance-HOORAY FOR THE U.S.A. We have quite the group on our hands! Click on the video below to hear these wonderful voices!

(Please have patience. We are having some technical difficulties with this video-it works on our PCs at school;however, when we try to play it at home on our MACs it does not work-we are looking into this problem.)

In TNT on Wednesday the children colored, cut out and glued their very own bald eagle. Check out the picture below:

Stuffing our eagles!
Thursday we got to take a break for all the hard work to watch three dancers for the ALVIN AILEY Dance Company. What an honor. A special thanks to the cultural arts committee for bringing them to us.

Waiting to get into the church....it's cold.!

Look closely at these two pictures, you might see your child!

IN computer lab the students got to use the iPads again. This time in pairs,  they typed their spelling words in the notes for a review before the big test. One child played the role of the teacher giving the test; the other child was the student.  Once they completed the list, they switched roles. They are enjoying the iPads and Steve Jobs in our class keeps saying, "I invented those!!!!"

HANDS-ON-SCIENCE
Breaking Down the Barriers!  This week our science experiment was a supplement to MLK Day.
The Learning Objective:  The students used their five senses to make observations about brown and white eggs.  They came to understand how people and eggs are the same – they can be very different on the outside but are the same on the inside. We related this to Martin Luther King and talked about what a hero and Famous American he was to our country.
The students had a great time using their five senses and learning about MLK!

Breaking down the barriers....
 New spelling words:
bad, give, today, week, something, bus, year, can't, tell, across
Challenge: freedom, civil, monument, leader
SURPRISE THE TEACHER WORD ???

REMINDERS:
No School on Monday, January 16th--  MLK Day!
*Famous American Paper dolls are due Friday, January 20th
*Please bring in a shoebox for your child for Valentine's Day.  It can be plain, decorated or wrapped; it is your choice.  It must have a slot on the top, the box should be able to open, the bigger size shoebox the better (it needs to hold 50 valentines). It also needs your child's first & last name on the top of it. (please don't bring into school until the week of February 6th)
*On Valentine's Day you can bring in valentines for both classes please don't write people's names on them just have your child sign their names (this will make it easier to pass them out to both classes)
*Valentine's Day Party on February 14th from 2:00-3:00pm
*Hooray for the U.S.A. performance Thursday, February 16th @9:20am in the stage MPR (children dress as their Famous American on this day)
