The reports the students have given on their Australian animals have been informative and delivered with great enthusiasm. We noticed that each student added their own information that they have found from resources at home. Many could tell us in detail about predators and the other varieties of their animals. One thing for sure, they enjoyed knowing all about an Australian animal of their own. From Bandicoot to Spotted Cuscus --we have got it all! Below is a sampling of pictures from the students who presented.

In Integrated Language this week these students have been hard at work on the creation of a 5 page story about a day in their life. They took their favorite day in school and made a web of the details before they began to write them in order. They used a starting sentence for each paragraph and used sequential words, like: first, then, and next. In our centers we also had sentences with nouns, adjectives and verbs to be highlighted. This is a review of sorts, but one that they can do over and over again. There were several students who were able to put together Coral Reef puzzle because they had finished their required centers.
Mrs. W read a beautifully illustrated book about Monarch butterflies with a group. Another story we read this week was called Shoe Town, based off of several nursery rhymes. Repeated lines were the topic after our read. They recognized many of the nursery rhymes, like Hey Diddle Diddle and The little old lady who lived in a shoe. Mrs. W forgot to take a picture of the wonderful pop up books the students are making from Big Al---a fish tale!
Mountain Math was an option for centers and it was a review of time and place value. The students go at their own pace from the numbers on the board.

We welcomed Mr. L who spoke to us about his ADVENTURES living in Australia, the two years he lived there. He had a great looking hat that we might all want this summer that swats around at the flies, so they aren't so bothersome. Mr. L talked about his dives while he was in Australia and so many interesting things, the students had not heard before. Thank you to Mr. L for coming to the first grade.
Joshua had a birthday! He brought an assortment of donuts.
Joshua Murphy is fascinated with The Titanic and has been for quite some time. His family went to the exhibit at Union Staion and he did a wonderful presentation for his class. We asked him to do the same for our class. He put so much effort in to his presentation. Thank you Joshua, you are a Captain of Great Knowledge!!!
Literary Festival was today at Rockhurst University. We were priviledged enough to listen to Paul Zelinsky, illustrator and David Shannon. They will be at Reading Reptile this weekend. Paul drew Rumpelstiltskin and David drew "David." Each illustrator and author were entertaining and so talented. David Shannon told the students that each of them is an artist.
