Just in case you haven't already heard...we officially began our fairy tale theme. Once again these first graders have surprised us by their prior knowledge of these tales thanks to your support at home! Now, sit back and watch a week in the life of first graders from a land NOT too far away...
BIRTHDAY BOY MATTHEW!
Many students had the chance this week to share their "Day in the Life Of..." books. Hearing them read aloud made us so proud of their hard, hard work and their amazing reading skills!
Cute illustration Elise!
We were soooo busy in math this week. We have been reviewing problem solving. It is great to see how far they've come since the beginning of the year with this difficult skill. They now can read the problem on their own, plan out how they will solve it and then, implement their plan and record their answers!!
We have reviewed money with several different activities ranging from adding money, showing value, matching the written amount with the coins, and graphing with coins. If you have any loose coins at home that need to be counted don't forget to call on your trusty first grader!
We've also practiced measuring with inches this week. Students had the opportunity to find as many things in the room that measured one foot.
How tall is the easel? Looks taller than a foot!
Almost exactly one foot!
Nate found a fairy tale book one foot long!
Matching analog clocks with digital clocks.
Matching coins to the written number.
Calculator practice.
Fraction practice with 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4.
Listening center.
Listening center book for the week.
One activity we did during Literacy Centers this week was to write a letter to a character from a fairy tale. Each student was given a mailbox with the character's name attached. Students knew who to write to after they picked out a card with the name of a character on it. Once a letter was finished, in the mailbox it went! Most students thought it was important to share their own personal advice to help the character not get into trouble again. They had so much fun writing and reading their classmate's letters that we will have to continue it again next week!
What a great question to ask Rapunzel!
Reading their fairy tale character mail.
Reading the word wall words.
Unscrambling fairy tale sentences.
Sequencing the story of The Gingerbread Boy.
Molly's thank you note to Mr. Long for coming to share his adventures from Australia.
Reading with their "phones" the Little Red Hen in guided reading.
Molly's Bama reading Flat Stanley to the class.
Mrs. Graham reading Thumbelina to the class.
Each child picked a fairy tale to recreate on a banner. They first had to make sure they were familiar with the story by reading the book. Then, they were given the banner and had to plan out how to add the title, author, and illustrations. These first graders wrote titles with bubble letters and did it with ease! We were amazed with their artistic talents!! Once the illustrations were complete they searched through the bins of crafts we have in the class to add details which added beautiful finishing touches to these works of art. We can't wait for you to see what they created!
Hmmmm....Whose child made this mess?? Artistic talent IS messy I guess...
Hard working kids.
These all look soooo good!!
Are they growing yet??
In computer lab we used the ipads and used 2 new apps called "Gems Blitz" and "Fairy Tale coloring". Students had to use logical reasoning skills as they tried to line up the colored gems in a row. Don't be surprised if your first grader comes home and asks you to down load these apps if you are an ipad owner!
