Shhhh....Poets At Work!

We are hard at work as the children are becoming authors of some amazing poetry. This week Miss Fate and Mrs. Waller have guided the children as they have finished up their Haiku's, reviewed Acrostics, learned about Cinquains and many other poems.

The students have also come up with their very own similes. They are completing a guided writing project using the book, Quick As A Cricket by Audrey and Don Wood. They loved coming up with similes and comparing themselves to a variety of animals. They will soon be on display outside our door. In the last half of the week they worked on rhyming poems as well as free verse poems.
Authors hard at work!

Independently, the students have worked with their number scrolls, in their phonics and grammar books, reviewed math facts on the iPads, created a basket of flowers for their MOMS, and listened to two books in the listening center.
Rowen completes his follow-up activity after listening to Hopper Hunts For Spring.
Beautiful!

In Math, Miss Fate continued to discuss 2D & 3D shapes. Mrs. Waller distributed hammers again as the class sang Johnny Works With One Hammer....we couldn't let Sloane and Even miss out on this fun lesson which reinforces number sense. We counted the hammers in a variety of groups: groups of 2, 3, 4, etc. and discussed how this is exactly what we do when we multiply...we are simply counting by groups. Check out the pictures below.
Johnny Works With One Hammer
5 groups of 5; 5 x 5 = 25!
4 groups of 4; 4 x 4 = 16!
Our 3D shape scavenger hunt......

In Social Studies we worked together as a class to create our very on Limerick in regards to HAITI'S HOPE.

Check it out:
There once was a class in first grade,
They sold lots of yummy lemonade.
They sold cookies too,
By the time it was through,
Lots and lots of money was made!

The students also worked in small groups to begin coming up with their very own Limericks. Thursday they wrote their own wish poems and color poems. They are becoming great poets.

Take a look below...in TNT on Wednesday the children created their very own spring flowers.

In computer (iPad) lab on Friday we had a great time! Mrs. Wiedeman declared it FUN DAY in  honor of the retirement of St Paul's very own Sherry Twyman. The students were allowed to make their own rocket (finally) before launching their mission. They also played STARS; a strategic game of colors. They practiced their addition using the Math Cakes app and also BINGO math. These are all great apps to use for review over the summer.

Hands-On Science was a HIT! The famous Diet Coke and Mentos  (mint) experiment was completed. What a great chemical reaction. We are certain your children will tell you all about it.
Miss Fate avoids the geyser!

Lastly, on Friday we had a going away party for William and Zach. Each child read their note to William and Zach and we celebrated with cake and lemonade. William and Zach, we will miss you!
