We spent another busy, fun-filled week this week in first grade!!
These first graders have quite a talent for poetry as well as geometry. Oh my, this rhyming thing is catching. Check out our week below to see what I've been attaching. (to the blog)
Enjoy!
Listening center we read Bentley and the Egg.
Nate working on homophones.
Elise's homophone- hose and hoes
Ethan's homophone- threw and through
Ellie's homophone- beat and beet
Paige reading poetry charts
Sawyer making a friend poem
In literacy learning students finished sentences by filling in the blanks.
In math this week we worked on group of 3 and groups of 5, otherwise known as multiples. We used the song, "Johnny Worked with One Hammer" to show when one "Johnny" had 5 hammers that represents one group of 5 or 1x5=5.
By the time we finished we had 5 "Johnnys" moving 5 hammers while we sang the song. It was quite humorous and most importantly, we learned 5 groups of 5 is equal to 25! Pretty cool!
Joshua can't believe he knows multiplication!!
We also worked with our hundreds mats to practice adding and subtraction moving the marker up and down on the chart.
Mrs. Watt stopped by to see all our great learning.
We have been working on 2-D shapes and 3-D shapes. This week we went on a scavenger hunt in the class to find as many cones, cylinders, spheres, cubes and rectangular prisms.
At the book swap!
They loved this opportunity to swap books for summer reading
Ethan JUMPING to the sky!
Two birthday boys-one 3/4 birthday and one birthday girl this week!! What a busy treat week!
JUMP Will, JUMP!
Happy Birthday Molly!!
Mallory LOVED those cupcakes!
In TNT this week we worked in two groups and used our new poetry skills to create color poems. Then we used our pattern skills and created quilt pieces with the colors we wrote about.
Mrs. S. took our masterpieces and turned them into beautiful quilts.
BLUE
Sharks are blue, the ocean is too.
A flock of bluejays flies over the zoo.
Sweet blueberries!
Those with eyes of blue are few.

PINK
Pink is a combination of white and red.
And also the color of my head.
Flamingos eating pink shrimp.
Ballet shoes twirling on a chimp.
Cotton candy is very sticky,
but bubble gum in my hair is very icky!
All these things are pinkalicious
and some of these are quite delicious!

Hands on science was exploding with fun this week! Ms. Fate did an experiment with us using Mentos and Diet Coke. The chemical reaction was explosive as you can see in the picture!! If you are brave enough to try at home, here is the link to instructions and cool videos.
Some of the 8th graders had a chance this week to teach a science lesson to our class. They did a fabulous job teaching, guiding and managing our class! The class was instructed to make predictions about how many bears and the size of bears would balance the scale.
Have a wonderful weekend! and HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
