First Month in First!!!

 Life skill this week: COOPERATION

Our first grade helpers in our class.

Our fourth week has been a fabulous one. We are very busy during our Integrated Language Arts time.  In centers the children have reviewed rhyming words, opposites, ABC order, introduced to compound words and other word work.

This week the children reviewed the short a, short i sounds, and were introduced to the ck/k sounds in their Phonics Books.  The students were introduced to their Grammar Books with Mrs. Waller and in them they learned how to write a correct sentence.  The children also took letters and learned how to make different words using the same letters.

Miss Fate read I Went Walking by Sue Williams (I went walking. What did you see? I saw a black cat looking at me). The students then created and illustrated their own version of this book. Their writing is improving greatly and their illustrations are close behind.
We have true artists in our class!!!

MATH--
We continue to move onward with our math concepts. We are reviewing rote counting, even/odds, tally marks, addition with unifix cubes, number lines, patterns, odds/evens, switcheroos (ex: 4+5=9, 5+4=9) developing our own math equations with stickers & we are learning that things can come in PAIRS!  We did some firefighter addition and learned how to write problems & equations.  We played this really cool game where we threw a Koosh ball gently at our SmartBoard and then it would flash a ten frame up on the screen.  The children had to figure out how many dots were shown in the ten frame.  If they could figure out how many were blank they could then use their number sense to figure out the answer.  It was so much fun!
Sorting our numbers are they Even or Odd?

ODD numbers up to 100!
SmartBoard Fun!

touch the dice to roll it......then count the ten frames & extras....

drag the correct circles to equal the dice....

Throwing the ball at the screen when it hits a dot it changes & flashes a ten frame!

SOCIAL STUDIES--In Social Studies with Miss Fate the students have been presenting their HOW I GOT MY NAME information as they are being turned it....don't worry they are not due until next week. This is a great way for the students to learn to be a good listener and to practice their public speaking skills in front of their classmates.  The students love learning information and new things about one another.  Last week we taught the students about the multiple intelligences and we discussed how we all learn differently. It is important for the students to start to discover how it is that they learn best. We continue to work in our theme notebooks as we learn about ourselves, others and our caring community.  This theme is such a great way to start the year as we build our own amazing classroom community.

Mrs. Waller also introduced the Venn Diagram and the students learned to compare and contrast two different items. The students had fun using two hula hoops to learn about this concept.  Being able to compare and contrast items is a higher order thinking skill and really gets their wheels turning. We had fun as we compared the characters "George & Martha" a story book we have been reading each day.

TNT-- (Try New Things) Our community helpers..... the firefighters were a no show & we are thinking they probably had to go put out a fire.  So, we used our life skill flexibility and we read this book instead.

HANDS ON SCIENCE with Fate/Wiedeman-- (FROM THE LAST WEEK & THIS WEEK) Last week in Hands on Science we did the Celery Experiment. We learned all about plant cells & a new big word: osmosis.  Here are some pictures below.

Can you get the paperclip to float by using a piece of tissue paper?  We did it!!!

COMPUTER LAB with Waller/Lorfing--This would be great to reinforce these skills at home: http://illuminations.nctm.org/ go under the Pre-K to 2nd grade tab & we worked on ten frames.  Some practiced sight words on www.abcya.com this week.

FYI-I have had some questions about the “Picture Pass”
the “Picture Pass” is either the receipt from on-line ordering or if parents pay by check-the envelope that was part of the flyer that went home with payment included.
These are the things the teachers put in the envelope for our homeroom.  This will go to the photographer on picture day.
Parents that want to wait until they see the pictures-will not have a “Picture Pass”-ordering later costs a bit more and there are fewer options-
Parents do NOT need to order pictures to be in the yearbook-all students are pictured in the yearbook.
Please let me know if there are questions-thanks!

We love teaching your children! At recess this week, the teachers played baseball with the kids it was a "hit!" Quinn hit the ball over the fence twice in one game once all the way to Starbucks & once to Walnut Street!  The kids all used cooperation during this game and worked together.  Have a wonderful weekend!
Love, Miss Fate & Mrs. Waller
