Beginning, Middle and End of a Story!
While the children were working in their independent centers Mrs. Waller pulled small groups and the students illustrated the beginning, middle and end of The Gigantic Turnip, a story that we had read earlier in social studies. We used flap books to illustrate this concept.
|
Each flap represents the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Miss Fate has continued guided reading. They played a fun game called, ZAP IT! to review sight words at each child's level. They also read and summarized many great stories.

Wrapping yarn around your finger to help you summarize the story! You must be done by the time it runs out.
In math we are introducing the concept of missing addends (which is beginning algebra) and we have continued to talk about all the combinations of numbers that make 10! Your children are doing so well in math. They love number corner; especially coming up with the equations for the day.

What # goes with 7 to make 10?

Missing Addends
In social studies the students have continued presenting "How I Got My Name" papers, as well as family collages. We are enjoying getting to know everyone.
Mrs. Waller read the story of The Gigantic Turnip. We discussed the problem and solution of the story. Problem: The old man and the old woman planted a turnip that grew so big they could not get it out of the ground. Solution: They worked together with their farm animals, and finally with the help of a mouse, they pulled it out of the ground! After we read the story, the students brainstormed a list of problems that we have here in our classroom community. We voted on the problem that we thought needed to be addressed the most immediately. OUR PROBLEM: Walking quietly in the halls. OUR SOLUTIONS: 1. Do not talk, 2. ALWAYS walk, 3. Choose a good place in line, 4. Move away from distractions, 5. Do not swing lunch boxes, 6. Listen to the teacher. We will continue to work on this throughout the next few weeks....only time will tell if our solutions are going to work.

In TNT, Mrs. Andrea Klingner (former first grade teacher at St.Paul's), her husband and their dog Sunny came to visit. They participate in a great program call Pets For Life. They explained the purpose of the program to the children. Sunny demonstrated her many skills and the kids were able to meet and greet Sunny!

Meet Sunny!
We had a blast in computer lab today.....after demonstration, the students explored the app, Sock Puppets. This app can be used in a variety of ways in the school setting. Today the children worked with a partner and practiced the many ways to make 10! Have them tell you all about it. If possible, have them show you at home!
Hands-On Science was a blast. Ask your child how they got milk to change colors. We are sure your kids will fill you in!
