Fall is in the air!

We had another productive, fun filled week in first grade!

The family collage assignments have been shared in class this week.  Students have done an amazing job sharing all about their families and the details of their collages. This is the first of many different opportunities these first graders will have to stand in front of the class and present.  The students gets to tell whatever they want about their collage and then take three compliments from the other students.  They can ask about materials they used or where a picture was taken or how old is their dog.   They are all very interested in each other's work.  These collages are on display all year on the cabinets as you walk in the room.  When a you are volunteering please take time to look them over.  Thanks to families for their interest in helping assemble them.

These students presented their "How I got my Name"  information this week.  We will take more next week.  We have names chosen because of familial history and names chosen because they are unique.  Unanimously the kids liked their names.  One child was named something for 6 hours and the parents changed the name to something different.  Naming a child is a huge responsibility...we know.

Picture Day came and went and your first grader is officially a part of our First Grade!  They were all looking so fine!

During TNT this week we were fortunate to have community helpers: Tom, Andrea and Sunny Klinger come to share with the first grade about their special program called, Pets for Life.  Tom and Andrea take their golden retriever: Sunny to KU Med Center twice a week to visit patients from the elderly to small children.  They spoke to the class to inform them about Sunny's job, other working jobs, and the importance of these dogs in our community.  They also took time to share the importance of greeting new dogs by asking the owner for permission to approach the dog and then use your fist first to allow the dog to smell you and then scratch on the dog's chin.

A new word was introduced during Science.  We did a hands on experiment with milk and introduced a VARIABLE--liquid soap--- we saw what the molecules of fat did when we introduced the soap on a Qtip.
It's an easy experiment and the chemists loved it!  We talked about what would happen when using whole milk, buttermilk, or 1 % milk.  The results will vary.  All you need is a lipped plastic plate, milk, a few drops of food coloring, and liquid soap.  They loved this one.  It's called color changing milk.

We have to solve a mysterious case in Math.  It's the case of the missing addends!  We made books with dot stickers to illustrate our understanding. We used baggies to illustrate visually our understanding of  equations with sums of 10 or less.   The card shown gave us our SUM and we needed to make three ways to make that sum.

We met our buddies this week.  They will be joining us in Chapel beginning next Friday.  We had a gorgeous morning to play with them on the playground.  Three of our buddies were absent so we will meet them next week.  Our buddies are in Mr. Stewart's class.

In reading we learned Schema--the term that refers to applying knowledge from our stories we read to prior knowledge from our life experiences.  We will hear schema a lot in first grade.  To show how the Most beautiful doll in the world was something we all could relate to Mrs. Wiedeman brought in some of her childhood dolls that were just like the doll in the story.   We are discovering words with -ill and -it endings.  Words we already knew and words new to us.  Ms. Lorfing worked in small groups on navigating our Word Book which acts as our personal dictionaries.   Several groups did some poetry readings for us.  We also had stories about butterfly life cycles and Ginger brought in a catepillar to watch during the week.  Within 30 minutes on Thursday our catepillar, named Stripes was curled in his cocoon.  He ate all the milkweed leaves Mrs. H sent in with Ginger.  Thank you for the life experience of watching this little guy do his thing while we read about it in our books.  SCHEMA!!!!
