In Integrated language this week our phonics focus was on short "a" words and reviewed short "i" words.  We continued to work on making compound words as well and made words with pom poms. In reading we used our word wall to read words by saying, snapping, clapping, stomping out words.  We used the ipads to read stories and used the BIG books to practice reading aloud. We worked on summarizing stories with beginning, middle, and end.   In writing we worked on writing the months of the year in order, correct punctuation in sentences, rainbow writing with our spelling words and we began brainstorming ideas for our first independent story of the year on the topic of Halloween.

In math we are continuing our practice on doubles.  Hopefully, you have had several opportunities to quiz your child at home on these.  Test is Thursday, Oct. 18th.  We are also working on subtraction and are focusing on whole, parts we know, and the missing part.  Teaching subtraction this way shows the correlation between addition and subtraction and also shows how finding a missing addend is similar to subtraction.
Practicing our math facts with "First to Twelve"

In social studies we discussed what we already know about bears and what things we want to learn about bears.  We focused on polar bears this week and learned about their habitat, why their fur is white, what they eat and their size.  We then got a special treat in TNT- Klondike Bars! We predicted how many bites it would take to eat the bar and made comparisons with the bar such as- My polar bear pie is as cold as______.  Everyone was so surprised to find out it took so many bites to finish!  Average bites were 40-55!

We also had the chance to get to know the "new members" of our class by interviewing our teddy bears.  We asked questions such as the age of our teddys, favorite foods, games he/she likes to play, how they like to be hugged and who is their favorite person.  Then, we each shared the responses with the class.  WE LOVE OUR BEARS!

In hands on science we used gummy bears and made a hypothesis describing what would happen if you put a gummy bear in water.  Once the bears were placed in cups we observed and shared the results.  This little experiment showed the students how some things are porous and absorb and some do not.  THe gummy bear was twice the size by the end of the day.

This week "Stripes" whose name changed to Firespeed, our monarch caterpillar finished his transformation from chrysalis to a beautiful butterfly!  We set him free and wished him well as he flew away.  Thanks to Ginger and her family for giving us this fun opportunity to observe the life cycle of a butterfly.

In computer lab we used the ipads and tried out 3 new apps- Futaba: a word recognition game, Friends of Ten- an addition/subtraction activity using 10 frames and Quick images- another fun activity which practices their number recognition with images.

We celebrated 2 birthdays in our class this week!
Happy birthday Josh!

Happy birthday Byers!

We are having so much fun watching your children learn and grow!  It is amazing to see how much they can do in 7 short weeks and we can't wait to share it with you at conferences soon.
Enjoy this nice Fall weather!
