We are having a "Beary" Special Week!

Language Arts
This week has been full of fun! We have been learning so much in our Language Arts center time every morning.  In guided groups this week we focused on reading with the teacher, we have introduced ideas, setting, problem & solution a start to our creative writing with Mrs. Waller.  Miss Fate gave the kids a Sight Word Assessment of the Dolch Sight word lists that we will share with you at conferences. The mini lessons we worked on this week were about Adjectives & Nouns.

This week in Reading we listened to a story called Grizzly Bears and followed it up with a Bear Book Talk.   We  worked on singular and plurals, Odd/Even numbers, Wikki Stix for our spelling words and short vowels a,o & u.

In Writing we wrote thank you notes to the firemen, bear facts, wrote the room and added new words to our Writing Words Book, color words for adjectives, and skip counting by 2's, 5's, 10's.

For Word Work  we stamped our spelling words with dough stampers, Starfall.com, word wall work with Bananagrams, bear adjectives, we pancake flipped our short i words & our spelling words.

Math
In math this week we took a math assessment over all the concepts and skills we have learned about so far in first grade!  You won't believe how far we have come and it is only October!  We will share these with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences.  We have continued to work with the calendar on distinguishing between the date and day. Mrs. Waller also led the kids in some really hard Bear Logic!!

We had a blast at Carolyn's Country Cousins Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday. We got to see pigs, goats, peacocks, chickens and turkeys, to just name a few. We learned all about different types of pumpkins and how they grow. We also went on a wagon ride and got to pick out our perfect pumpkin. We loved running through the corn maze.  It was the perfect day for our field trip, the sun was shining and the sky was blue. We ate lunch and got an extra long recess on their amazing playground. Thank you to all the parents that were able to join us.

Try New Things--This week we made Polar Bear Puppets & learned all about Polar Bears.
                                             Buddy Run

Hands-on Science were canceled this week due to the Buddy Run. But we still managed to get some iPad time in after our run.  We played with math logic app "Flow." We had such a great time showing our spirit with our 7th grade buddies. We practiced our chants at recess (in a top secret way) and loved every minute of it! "Fate/Waller, Waller/Fate....we will dominate!"  We showed plenty of spirit up on the field. Activities like this help only make our classroom community even stronger!  Overall, it was such a special treat to be able to run with our buddies!

I HAVE SPIRIT!

We love our Buddies!!!

We've got SPIRIT yes we do! We've got SPIRIT how about you? We've got MORE!

First Grade is the BEST!!!

FATE/WALLER....WALLER/FATE....WE WILL DOMINATE!!!
Social Studies

We have introduced our Teddy Bear Friends and met: Roofus, Coco, Lucy, Little Bear, Billie Bob Joe, Winnie the Pooh, no name, Gingerbread, Ted, Bear, Fred, George, Poley Flowers, Alishia, Grace, Fluffy aka Al, Fuzzy Wuzzy, Beasly, Crazy Bear.  This has been a great activity for the kids as they become more comfortable speaking in front of their peers. Plus, Miss Fate and Mrs. Waller have enjoyed getting to hear their creative stories.  We found out some of the bears have come from Build a Bear, Decoration Boxes, out of the states and or have been given as gifts.  We even have a talking bear and one that plays music!  We have been continuing to  learn about the Polar Bear, Brown Bears and Black Bears in our theme notebooks. They are much more informative compared to our last theme.  We also read our Scholastic news articles about firefighters, pumpkin patches, and Columbus Day.
