A Long Winter's Nap

We are 'beary' knowledgeable about sloths, polar bears, sun bears, spectacled bears, grizzlies, sun bears, pandas, and kodiaks!  The bear logic we've mastered has been so much fun---Math and logic fun????  Oh yes, that's the idea!
Our stuffed bears have seen some beautiful Autumn days on the playground and now they come home to their nice cozy beds.

In Integrated Language we have begun our nightly book in bag program.  We are reviewing Reading strategies again with Ms. Lorfing.  Mrs. Wiedeman pulled groups and worked on punctuation and using periods with titles of people.  Dr. Green, Mrs. Wiedeman, Ms. Lorfing, Rev. Runnels, Mr. Waller ( he was in our presidential book, Grace for President).  With the election at the beginning of the week we wanted to include the students in the nation's history.  We read Grace for President and they listened to Duck for President the week prior.  Each student made a campaign poster for the character of their choice for president.  The choices were Grace, Duck and Farmer.  We tallied and graphed the results.  Duck barely squeaked by with a win!!!

How cute is this official voting coral???

The centers in tic tac toe this week were:  Panda Number Order, Snowy tracks ( recognizing ed, ing and s endings) , ABC election words, days of the week ordering, practicing spelling words stamping in playdough, phonics , short "e" , opposites, adjectives describing our bears.  We had a handwriting lesson with Mrs. Wiedeman learning "e" and "k."

On Wednesday the first graders went to The Seventh Grade Wax Museum.  We listened to their reports come alive with each American Revolution person they researched.  We love our BUDDIES!  They make us feel so good when they see us in the hall and take us to chapel!

In Math we learned place value and it's importance as we continue finding the sum and difference on Math equations.  We made a number line and found that as we reached 10 we needed a ten rod.   We found out how many tens and ones our first initial of our first name took.

For the Book Fair week we had a great time with the buddies again .  The buddies brought a book to read to us and we had one to read to them.

Guest Author, Katie Speck and her friend Mabelle ( the cockroach) came to chapel and read some of the newest book she wrote.  We loved the book and it's on our reading level!

We made some pretty spectacular leaf foxes with the leaves of the season.

Our Science experiment this week was to demonstrate the importance of the polar bears black skin beneath it's fur.  It helps to keep the bear warm.  The ice cube on the black paper is to represent the black skin that keeps the polar bear's heat in.
Black paper illustrates the black skin on polar bear.

The Teddy Bear Picnic...Mrs. Waller presented her power point review of bears around the world after the kids ate.

The best part of the week was the BOOK FAIR!!!!  The enthusiasm for the book fair was fun to hear.  Thank you to many families who "LIVED" here this past week.  When the teachers were leaving for the day, some families were just arriving to make this book fair special.  Mr. Nerstheimer was the person who brought the authors and read to the kids when they came to the fair.  He's the best!!!!  Thank you , thank you.

We are in the middle of the Thanksgiving Food drive.  It is a time where we are helping the 25,000 people who are served during the year at the food pantry.  Next week the pantry is collecting Personal hygiene products, diapers, mac and cheese, rice... ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP IS WONDERFUL!!!!!

If you would like to see what's going on in PE.  Here is the link to Mrs. Shurtleff's blog.
