November News....Bye Bye Bears!

It has been a busy week full of fun and excitement. We have started our "Book in a Bag" program, attended the book fair, read with our buddies, heard a former St. Paul's parent author speak to us, had our teddy bear picnic and continued with our somewhat normal routine!

Our Math last week went into learning about double digit subtraction without regrouping & this week math has been filled with learning about inverse operations & fact families.  A fact family has 3 members in its family.  The largest number is the "boss."  You have to come up with 4 number equations that go with that family. For example: with the fact family 4,5,9.  4+5=9, 5+4=9, 9-5=4, 9-4=5.  They have caught on so quickly.  Miss Fate taught a fact family dice lesson.  The kids all made their own fact family dice books.  Mrs. Waller taught a fact family domino lesson. The kids had to pull a domino & then write equations.  It was so much fun!

On Wednesday, we had an all school buddy read in.  The children loved reading to their buddies.

In our Language Arts block this week Miss Fate did guided reading with the students as well as playing Slap that Sight Word.  Ask your children about this game it was a favorite!  You could play this at home with the flashcards we sent home with you at conferences. The first time we showed the children how to pick a "just right book." They have chosen books for themselves at their level and placed them in their bag. So far, so good....the bags have come back each day & with the books in them. Thank you for your support with this!  We will continue this next week. Our skill focus this week was "short e" & Mrs. Waller introduced verbs to the children.

During Social Studies we have been teaching them all about voting, the election, ballots, voter registration cards & we even had a mock election with the two stories "Duck for President & Grace for President."  It was so cool & we loved wearing our "I Voted" stickers after the election.  Miss Fate continued to work in the theme notebook as we learn about all the different bears. Make sure you praise your children when they show you all the information they have learned about bears.  They should be coming home Friday at the latest.  Below the children fill out their bear boxes....for each letter of the alphabet, the students have to come up with a word that has something to do with bears.
