IN A LAND FAR, FAR AWAY.....

We are having so much fun as we dive into our fairy tales and folktales!  Each student has been assigned a tale to illustrate on a banner that will hang in our classrooms. We have created fairy tale and folktale mailboxes. Each child has a mailbox above their cubby now that  belongs to the main character in their assigned tale. Throughout the following weeks the children will choose characters they want to write letters to and place them in their mailboxes. The letters will then be read by the person receiving them.

Guided Reading

Take a look at the pictures below from our literacy learning block this week. The students have been reviewing their spelling words and what happens when you add -le to a word. They are unscrambling sentences and reading many fairy tales and folktales. Miss Fate has continued with guided reading and Mrs. Waller has assessed the students on their sentence structure.

Wednesday they measured their very own friends. Thursday we played The Measurement Is Right! Four players had to estimate the length of an object using a non-standard measurement tool. They have also continued their review of various math concepts by using a tic tac toe board and visiting different centers. They are having so much fun! Check out the pictures below:

In social studies the students have been reading their fairy tale or folktale and starting on their book banners. They are having a great time. We have also started the beginning of the planning for the 3rd annual FIRST GRADE LEMONADE AND COOKIE STAND for Haiti! More to come....

IN Hands-on Science the children planted their very own beanstalk as they listened to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. They discussed living things/plants and what makes them grow. This hands-on activity will be coming home soon.

In computer the children played a game of logical reasoning when they visited www.braingle.com
In this game the students help Jack plant and grow his beanstalk. First, they dig the hole with a shovel, plant the bean, add fertilizer and water. You have to go in order and each level gets harder and harder. This is always a favorite. You may have to visit this site at home.Once you are there, click on games and then beanstalk on the left side in a blue column!
