Once upon a time there were 22 very smart and very sweet first graders who studied about the great country of Australia. They learned so much and had so much fun they did not want it to end. SO... their teachers decided to give them one extra week to learn all they could about this land down under. BUT...knowing the end of the year is close at hand, their teachers knew they must move on so they decided to blend Australia with their new and exciting theme- Fairytales and Folktales. All the first graders were very delighted by this decision and everyone lived happily ever after or at least to the end of this week!!

Mrs. Gaffney brought in a special Australian snack for us to try called Vegemite. It comes in a tube and it meant to spread on crackers, bread, veggies, etc. Almost everyone decided to try it. Some really enjoyed it, while others weren't quite so sure. Obviously, Ms. L. was one of those! She found it on Amazon.com if you'd like to try it for yourself!
"Not too bad!", said Kate. "Yummy!", said Keira. "Not for me." said Addie.
We finished our fun stories, "We're Going on an Australian Animal Hunt". Their writing skills are outstanding and we'd love it if you wanted to stop by to read the creative writing these first graders created.

Listening center this week kicked off our fairytales with Little Red Riding Hood.
Noah is showing off his great reading skills to his mom while she was here volunteering. Thanks for your help in our class Mrs. B!

Ms. L. checked everyone's sentence structure skills this week. They are ready for 2nd grade!!
This week in math we reviewed time and money. We made a time telling mini-book and played 2 games counting coins and telling the time to the hour, half hour and quarter after, quarter till.
Our main focus this week in math was measurement. We used our feet and unifix cubes as well as a ruler to measure many different things and people around the room.

Mrs. N. helped out in the class this week and read to us in her best hillbilly accent, "Smoky Mountain Rose, An Appalachian Cinderella". The class was in aw of her performance!
At the Literature Festival at Rockhurst College Byers was called up to give her interpretation of our visiting author Herve Tullet's book which was written in french. She was quite the performer and made everyone giggle! Great job Byers!!
Illustrator, Jon Klassen and author Lemony Snickett shared the story, "The Dark" with us in a very humorous way! What a wonderful opportunity we had to go and meet these professional authors and illustrators. Thank you Mr. N. for making this happen for us!

Also, please remember to dedicate 15 minutes each night for your child to read his/her book in the bag. This reinforcement at home helps build their reading stanima and reinforces the important reading skills they've learned at school. Thanks for your support.
