SOCIAL STUDIES--In Social Studies the students have been presenting their FAMILY COLLAGES & THEIR HOW I GOT MY NAME HOMEWORK PROJECTS.  This is a great way for the students to learn to be a good listener and to practice their public speaking skills in front of their classmates.  The students love learning information and new things about one another.  Last week we taught the students about the multiple intelligences and we discussed how we all learn differently. It is important for the students to start to discover how it is that they learn best. We continue to work in our theme notebooks as we learn about ourselves, others and our caring community.  This theme is such a great way to start the year as we build our own amazing classroom community.   Below are some of the family collages...we can't wait to hear about the others!

In Math we are introducing the concept of fact families, 100's charts, skip counting & missing addends (which is beginning algebra) and we have continued to talk about all the combinations of numbers that make 10! Your children are doing so well in math. They love number corner; especially coming up with the equations for the day.

10 Frames & Part/Whole Cards

TNT (Try New Things)-- We were so lucky to have Mrs. Gould, an architect, come and visit with all the first graders.  She told them all about her job and they watched a PowerPoint slideshow learning  what she does each day.  The best part of the presentation was the Marshmallow Challenge activity.  This was a great team building activity and it was a great learning experience. We can't thank her enough!!!
TNT---Dana Gould
The Marshmallow Challenge...how tall can you get it using spaghetti, tape, string and a marshmallow that has to go on the top???

Thanks to Amy Hawley (Kate Rose's mom) from NBCAction News Ch.41 for talking about her job & recording the kids....fingers crossed it will be on the News Ch. 41 tomorrow night at 6pm....if we are lucky.

Buddies-- We met with our 7th Grade Buddies this week for the first time.  The first graders showed them all around the room.  We ate cookies with them and chatted for some time.    We also got to sit with them in the church today.  It was so exciting to finally meet our buddies.  What a special treat!

Hand on Science--This week in Hands on Science we did a sink or float lesson.  It went along with what we learned last week about surface tension.  Ask your children all about our experiment.  It was a great time finding out if the predictions we made came true.
Computer Lab-- In computer lab this week the children explored Kidspiration again.  What a wonderful computer program! They worked on a community lesson and a math lesson over patterns.
