We Are Family!

We are so amazed at how settled in your children seem here in first grade! As we get to know about your families through the amazing family collages you returned, we are becoming a family of our own here in ROOM 101.
Take a look at the pictures below from our integrated language arts block. We have continued to review short i with the word families -ick, -ill, -it, and ink. The students also continue to review compound words, work in their Handwriting Without Tears books, compare and contrast items using a venn diagram and write the word wall.  Your children are doing so well.  As they complete activities independently using their tic tac toe boards, they are also being pulled out for guided reading and to work on a variety of other skills with their teachers.
Emma places words on her venn diagram.....a rhyming review....
Jake and Charlotte play EVEN STEVEN/ODD TODD and write their even/odd numbers!

Lily sorts asking and telling sentences....

Sophia is hard at work on her compound word match....

Carmen and Eli have completed their compound word puzzle!
Mrs. Waller guides students in their reading
Jackson is making -ick words out of play dough......

The creation of our very own calendars!
Ms. Lorfing is teaching students about the beginning, middle & end of a story....using FLAP BOOKS!

In math this week we reviewed skip counting using the hundred chart; counting by five, tens and two's. We have also used the hundred chart to start helping us increase our sense of numbers.  We have talked about moving up one space or down one space and what that really means (you are actually adding or subtracting ten)...We have also introduced the concept of FRIENDS OF TEN which will help the children in their mental math computation.
Number Corner continues....if you look closely you will see some amazing equations!
Coloring our FRIENDS OF TEN chart!

Lamar and Kate count by 10's

In social studies the children are learning all about community helpers and what it takes to be a part of a community.  The students have also started to present their family collages and "How I Got My Name" information! We are learning so much. The children genuinely care about their friends and practice active listening as their peers present.

Community Helper BINGO
Using our SOCIAL STUDIES books to learn more about community helpers!

Please take a look at the video below from our TNT this week. Thank you Dana Gould, for speaking to us about architecture and challenging the kids with the marshmallow challenge! The children were given some spaghetti/pasta, one piece of tape, one piece of string, and one marshmallow. They were then challenged to see which team could build the tallest structure with the marshmallow ending up on top!  What a great team building activity. Perfect for our theme! The video is from the end of the challenge!

In Hands-On Science this week we continued our concept from last week...the students studied a variety of objects and made predictions in regards to whether the objects would sink or float when placed in water. Once again, Hands-On Science was a success!

A special thanks goes out to Kate's mom, Amy Hawley Rose, for coming and speaking to the first grade today about life as a journalist. She interviewed the kids and they got to watch themselves on the big screen. It was so exciting! Amy said she is going to put the children on NBC 41 ACTION NEWS tomorrow evening at 6 o'clock. Be sure to watch!
