We Are BEARY Busy in First Grade!

FIRST GRADE IS "BEARY" AWESOME!

It has been a short week, but we remain very busy! We continue our study of bears and we are learning so much. Take a look at the pictures below from our integrated language arts block. We have been writing Halloween stories, learning about nouns, practicing our short "o" words and much, much more!

In math we have reviewed our doubles and explored how the knowledge of our doubles can help us with mental math, ultimately resulting in an increase in our number sense.  We took our doubles test on Thursday and introduced the concept of DOUBLES PLUS 1 (If 6+6=12, then 6+7=13).  We are also continuing our review of the missing addend. WOW! Your children are working so hard!

In social studies our study of bears continues. We have learned about black bears, brown bears and continue to deepen our knowledge of the polar bear. After the students learn about each bear they are creating their very own bear fact sheet. They choose two or three facts to put into their own words and illustrate their findings. WOW-they are amazing!

We have been getting ready for fall while building our very own scarecrows in TNT this week! These are always a favorite as they brighten up our room!

In Hands-On Science this week the children created SUN PRINTS! Since we have been learning about the polar bear and its black skin....we started to wonder what would happen to a piece of black construction paper if we cut out shapes, glued them to the black paper and put them in the window????? Will the sun be attracted to the black paper?  Will the black paper fade?  How does the polar bear's dark skin help keep it warm in arctic temperatures??? So many questions....stay tuned!

 

OUR SUN PRINTS!

In computer lab the students used the puppet pal app to create puppets with their very own bears. After they created their bear puppets they worked with a partner to record a variety of  bear facts! SO MUCH FUN!
