Language Arts Block
We started the week going over all of the new centers and focused on the short u sound to go along with our spelling words. In guided groups, students participated in literature response activities to go along with the book Wild About Books. The book helps to instill a love of reading and presents lots of different and unique kinds of animals. Students also worked on nouns and verbs in their grammar books and played verb charades and verb jingo.

Math
We focused on the skill of subtraction this week. We tried to reinforce that students can use what they know about addition problems to help them do "mental math" (not using their fingers) on their subtraction facts. We also used concrete tools to help students understand the concept.

Social Studies
We did a special lesson on Monday in honor of Veteran's Day. Students learned about different part of the armed forces and the meaning behind this important holiday. Students also got to make a cornucopia and learned about them. We also talked about pilgrims and the differences/similarities between their culture and ours.
TNT
We made some really neat turkeys in honor of Thanksgiving coming up... Students had to follow directions to assemble their turkey and come up with words to finish phrases like "Turkeys can... Turkeys are... Turkeys have..."
Hands on Science
Students participated in an experiment called "Color changing milk". We found that when you put food coloring in milk, the colors do not spread. When you add a drop of liquid soap, it's an explosion of color!
Computer Lab
Students got some great typing practice! There is a wonderful website called "Dance Mat Typing" that helps students practice typing skills. We focused on keeping our fingers in the "home row" and they did a great job!

Regular words- trap, frog, trick, drip, crash, truck, crab, trip, crack, drop
Challenge words- candle, lights, festival, holiday

Monday- DOUBLE points for person hygiene items
Tuesday- DOUBLE points for dry beans, rice, pasta, crackers, mac & cheese, dry meals (hamburger helper)
Wednesday- 20 points for each multi-load bottle or box of laundry detergent
Thursday- DOUBLE points for disposable diapers sizes 3, 4, 5, and 6 and adult depends
Friday- TBA
